BGSU Volleyball Beats Undefeated Portland State

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In the first meeting between BGSU and Portland State, the Falcons were victorious pulling out a 3-2 (28-30, 23-30, 30-22, 30-22, 17-15) win over the Vikings. The Vikings came into the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic undefeated which they were able to continue with a win over Stony Brook Friday night (Aug. 31). However they were unable to keep their winning streak going after they met the Falcons on the court today.
The Falcons dropped the first two games of the match to the Vikings. Game one was neck and neck with both teams battling hard. Throughout game one there were nine times that the score was tied, even though the Vikings would pull out a 30-28 win in game one. Game two was very similar to game one with the lead going back and forth until the Vikings pulled away with a four point run that helped them win 30-23 in game two.
The Vikings came out fired up in game three taking a 5-0 lead. The Falcons were relentless as they continued to chip away at the Viking lead. With the score 18-12 in favor of the Vikings Kendra Halm put the ball away for a kill from Sam Fish, which led to a six point Falcon run, tying the game up at 18-18. After a kill from Portland's Andrea Brodie, the Falcons went on a four point run and took the lead 22-20. The Falcons came back with another burst of points with a five point run to pull away from the Vikings leading 27-21. The Vikings took their two timeouts throughout the courst the Falcons' come back, but weren't able to shake them one bit. The Falcons finished game three, 30-22 with a kill from Corey Domek assisted by Fish.
The Orange and Brown captured the lead in game four after the third point, which they didn't relinquish the rest of the game. The Falcons had two four point runs in game four which gave them a 20-12 lead over the Vikings. Stephanie Swiger finished game four for the Falcons with one of their 11 aces in the match. The Falcons were consistent in game four holding the Vikings to .104 hitting percentage, which was their lowest in the match.
With the match two games to two games, it was an all out battle in game five. The score went back and forth in favor of the Falcons and the Vikings. The Vikings took a 14-13 game point lead, and after a Bowling Green timeout the Falcons sided out to tie it up 14-14. With a kill from Corrie Mills the Falcons took a 15-14 lead for game point, but the Vikings answered back and sided out tying the score 15-15. The Falcons pulled through to take the last two points from a Mills kill and a double block from Swiger and Madeline Means.
The Falcon offense was firing on all cylinders with four players in double digits in kills. Swiger led the way with 14 kills for the match, Means followed up with 13 kills and 15 digs getting her third double-double of the season. Domek and Halm each added 12 kills a piece. Fish ran the offense for the Falcons recording a career high 49 assists and 12 digs, picking up her first collegiate double-double. Chelsey Meek led the defensive stop with 28 digs along with Maggie Karges' 10 digs.
The Falcons will conclude the Holiday Inn Buena Park Titan Classic tonight against the Stony Brook University Seawolves at 4:30 p.m. PT.
