Falcons Win 12-9 in Extra Innings

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored three runs in the top of the 12th to secure a 12-9 win over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The win was the first of the season for the Orange and Brown who are now 1-1 on the young season.
The 12th inning rally began with a single by Derek Spencer, who advanced to second on a groundout by Brandon McFarland. Following a fly-out to center, sophomore David Borcherdt singled to right-center plating McFarland for the eventual winning run. Just for good measure Ryan Shay picked up his third hit of the afternoon to score two more Falcons for the 12-9 final outcome.
Frank Berry, who pitched 3.1 innings, allowed just three hits in relief effort, picked up his first win of the season. He also went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two stolen bases.
Western Kentucky posted the first runs of the contest in the bottom of the third, scoring four Hilltoppers on five hits.
The Falcons answered right back with three runs of their own in the fourth and four more in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead through five innings.
Spencer doubled to right-center to plate two Falcons in the top of the ninth to push the lead to 9-5 heading to the bottom of the ninth, before WKU scored four runs on four hits sending the contest to extra innings.
Shay, Spencer and Logan Meisler all had three hits for BGSU, while Shay, Berry and Spencer all had multiple RBI performances in the Falcons opening win of the season.
The two teams will wrap-up the three game series tomorrow at 1 p.m. (CST).
