MURRAY, Ky. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored runs in each of the game's first four innings Saturday, including nine in the third en route to a 14-7 win at Murray State in game one of a three-game weekend set. The Saturday afternoon non-conference game was held at MSU's Reagan Field.
The victory improved the Falcons to 6-6 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 5-5. With the win, the Falcons also improved their current winning-streak to five games - their longest such streak since April of 2006 when they won seven-straight games (Mar. 29 - Apr. 8).
Picking up the win on the hill for the Falcons was senior captain Nick Cantrell, who threw six innings of relief between the third and ninth innings. The Waldo, Ohio native surrendered just two runs (all unearned) on three hits as he moved to 2-2 on the season with the win.
BG scored two runs to leadoff the game's scoring in the first and added another single run in the second. They then fell behind 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning, before they exploded for nine runs in the top of third to take a commanding 12-4 lead, which they never looked back from.
Collecting an RBI in the first would be sophomore third baseman Derek Spencer, who picked up three more on a three-RBI triple to right center in the third as part of the Falcons nine-run inning. He would lead all Falcon bats on the day going 1-for-5 with a game-high five RBI.
Also collecting RBI in the top of the third were second baseman Logan Meisler, catcher Ryan Schlater, shortstop Ryan Shay and right fielder Andrew Foster. Shay led BG with four hits as he was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Meisler added three hits and two RBI to go along with the two runs he scored.
Spencer capped the Falcons's scoring with an RBI that allowed him to reach on a fielding error by MSU's first baseman. The error plated Foster and Shay as the Falcons increased their lead to 14-6.
MSU had scored two in the bottom of third to answer the Falcons' nine-run top half. The Falcons' pitching staff though answered the bell and held the Thoroughbreds to just a single run in the ninth the rest of the way as freshman Brennan Smith gave up a single unearned run in the ninth on no hits to preserve the Falcon win.
Getting the start for BG was Kevin Light who went two innings giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits.
MSU was led on the afternoon by five different players who collected single hits and three who recorded an RBI.
On the mound, starter Jake Donze (1-2) took the loss for MSU, allowing 10 runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking five in 2.1 innings. Anthony Stacy came on in the third inning, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits, striking out one and walking two in 4.2 innings. Drew Leeper pitched the eighth inning, allowing no runs on one hit, walking one in one inning, while Seth McFarlin pitched the ninth, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out one and walking one in one inning.
Both teams will do battle on the diamond once again when they square-off in a Sunday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Game two will follow shortly after the conclusion of the first game and will be a seven-inning contest. Live stats for the games will be available at www.goracers.com.
