YPSILANTI, Mich. - Host Eastern Michigan University knocked the Bowling Green State University tennis team from the ranks of the unbeaten, posting a 4-3 victory over the Falcons Friday afternoon (March 21). The match, the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams, was held at the Chippewa Club.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-9 in dual-match play, and 1-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 11-1 and 0-1, respectively.
The Falcons won the doubles point, but Eastern Michigan captured four of the six singles matches, including wins at each of the top-three flights, to rally for the victory.
BGSU, ranked 56th in the nation, won the doubles portion of the match for the seventh consecutive dual and the 11th time in 12 dual matches this year to date. The duo of freshman Christine Chiricosta and junior Kelsey Jakupcin won an 8-3 match at the top flight, while the sophomore tandem of Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel won in a third-flight tiebreaker, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
In singles action, the Eagles won the first two matches that finished, with wins at the second and third flights. Kintzel bested Catharina Bestehorn by identical 6-3 scores at the fourth flight, tying the match at 2-2.
Eastern regained the lead with Aleksandra Stankovic's win at the fifth flight, and reigning MAC Player of the Year Vanessa Frankowski clinched the win for her team by winning a narrow match over Jakupcin at the top flight. Jakupcin rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the opening set to capture a 7-6 win in second-set action, but Frankowski won a narrow 7-5 decision in the third set.
Senior Jenna Nussbaum downed Joanna Woo at the sixth flight to complete the scoring.
The Falcons will look to rebound on Saturday (March 22), taking on the University of Toledo. That match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at Laurel Hill.
NOTES
* The loss to Eastern Michigan snapped BGSU's season-opening win streak at 11 matches ... that tied the school record for consecutive wins ... the 11-match streak also had set a new BG mark for best start to a season.
* Sophomore Samantha Kintzel won in both singles and doubles on Friday, running her overall season record to 36-9 ... freshman Christine Chiricosta was victorious in doubles, and now has an overall mark of 35-9 this year to date.
* EMU holds a 26-9 advantage in the all-time series with BGSU, and the Eagles now have won nine consecutive meetings ... BG's last win over Eastern came in the 1999-2000 season ... this year marks the second-straight season that EMU has won by a narrow 4-3 count over the Falcons.
* As mentioned, the Falcons now have won the doubles point in 11 of this season's 12 dual matches to date ... the lone exception was the Indiana State contest of Feb. 10, and BGSU rallied to win four of the six singles matches for a 4-3 win.
