MUNCIE, Ind. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University tennis team closed the road portion of the 2007-08 regular-season schedule with a 6-1 win at Ball State University Saturday afternoon (April 12). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-3 overall and 4-3 in MAC action. The Cardinals drop to 8-10 and 1-6, respectively.
BGSU won the doubles point for the fifth consecutive dual match and the sixth time in seven MAC matches this season. On this day, the Falcons' winning doubles teams were junior Kelsey Jakupcin and freshman Katia Babina at the top flight, senior co-captains Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle at the second level, and junior Libby Harrison and soph Katia Babina at flight number three.
In singles play, the Falcons won five of the six matches, sweeping each of them im two sets. Jakupcin captured her match at the top flight, downing Sophie Quist by scores of 7-5 and 6-1.
At the second flight, Chiricosta lost just one game in each set, sweeping Haly Calderwood. Babina, like Chiricosta, dropped a total of only two games in her straight-sets win over Jennifer Pollack. Babina won the second set by a 6-0 count.
Volle lost a total of just five games in her fifth-flight win over Georgina Thomson, while Harrison downed Katherine Rist at the sixth flight by identical scores of 6-3 in each set.
The Falcons will close the regular season by hosting Western Michigan University next Saturday (April 19). The Broncos have clinched a fourth consecutive MAC title, and are 7-0 in MAC play heading into next weekend. BGSU will meet the Broncos in a 1:00 p.m. start at the BGSU tennis complex, with seniors Nussbaum and Volle recognized in "Senior Day" festivities.
