
Falcons Tame Bearcats in Home Opener, 3-0

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - With the return of Bowling Green State University volleyball head coach Denise Van De Walle the Falcons swept the Binghamton Bearcats in the 2008 home opener, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19). The Falcons now 10-2 on the season extended their home opener winning streak to nine matches. BG is also now 6-2 this season against teams they have meet for the first time in program history.
The Falcons came out firing in the 2008 home opener as Corey Domek put away the first point of the season for the Orange and Brown with one of her 11 kills on the night. The first set remained fairly close until the Falcons put back-to-back three point runs to a 10-5 lead over the Bearcats. BG continued to pull away from Binghamton the rest of the way in the first set as they were able to score points in a row. With the Falcons up 22-14, the Bearcats sided out and were able to score four straight points but a kill from Louise Facca squashed their run giving BG set point. Meghan Mohr finished off the first set of the 2008 season in Anderson Arena for the Falcons with a kill. The BG offense hit their best in the first set recording 14 kills posting a .360 hitting percentage.
The second set was a much tighter race between the two teams. The Bearcats came up with an early five-point run followed by a three-point run to take a 9-5 lead over the Falcons. BG fought back scoring four straight points to tie the set up 11-11. The score remained close the rest of the set but the Falcons were able to score more points in a row. Mohr once again ended the set with a kill to give the Falcons a two set to none going into the locker room. The Falcons kept the Bearcats to there lowest hitting percentage of the match in set two with a .070.
The third set of the match started off similar to the second set but the Falcons eventually were able to pull away. BG started of the set siding out right away and scoring points in a row but Binghamton came up with two runs to tie the set up 11-11. The Orange and Brown were then able to put together a three-point run that was followed up by a five-point run to take a six point lead, 23-17. A kill from Facca got the Falcons the serve back and gave BG set and match point. The Falcons closed out the third set, 25-19. Once again the Falcons posted big numbers on offense with 16 kills hitting a .343.
The Falcons once again dominated their opponent at the net hitting a .293 compared to the Bearcats .127. The Falcons had there players in double-digits on offense with Domek and Mohr leading the way with 11 kills a piece. Mohr not only reached double-digits on offense but on defense as well with 11 digs recording her third double-double of the season. Also putting together a strong performance on offense was Kendra Halm with 10 kills with only two errors in 14 attempts, hitting a .571, the most efficient Falcon of the night. Running the offense for the Orange and Brown was Sam Fish collecting 34 assists. Senior libero Chesley Meek once led the Falcon charge in the back court with 18 digs.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 20) to host Rice at 12:30 p.m. and Hofstra at 7:00 p.m. on the final day of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational.
