NORMAL, Illinois - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team fell to the Illinois State Redbirds, 191.675-190.800 this evening (Jan. 23) in the Falcons' first non-conference meet of the season. The Falcons' uneven bars line-up was the highlight of the night as they won the event with a team score of 48.275, tying their season high set last weekend. Junior Breanne Guy led the bar line-up with a 9.750 to win the event. The Falcons posted four other top-three finishes, including a second place finish on floor and third place finish on vault from Dawn Christman, a second place finish on vault from Andera Kinzer and a second place finish from Katie Follett on beam.
"The meet went better than last week's even though we still have work to do," said head coach Kerrie Beach. "Vault and bars started out strong for us and have proved to be an area that we can depend on. We still have work to do on beam and floor, but we did see improvement this week."
"Dawn Christman did a great job on floor and vault," said Beach. "She really looked confident and got the job done."
The Falcons opened their first non-conference meet of the season with a strong performance on the uneven bars to win the event tying their season high team score of 48.275, set last weekend. Leading the way for the Falcons was Guy swinging her way to a 9.750 on bars to win the event. Guy's win was her first event win of the season on bars and fourth event win of the season. The bars were the Falcons strongest event on the night as five of their six scores were a 9.575 or better. Kasey Fillmore put together a 9.675 for a fourth place finish, Amber Brewer scored a 9.650 to come in fifth, while Jholeen Ponce posted a 9.625 tying for sixth.
The second rotation brought the Falcons to the vault, where they posted another strong team performance with a 48.100. The Falcons had three gymnasts finish in the top six overall on the vault with every gymnast finishing with a 9.375 or better. Kinzer had her third consecutive top-three finish on the vault as she stuck a 9.750 for a second place finish. Right behind her was Christman posting a 9.725 tying for a third place finish. Guy scored a 9.625 to tying for a sixth place finish.
At the end of the second rotation and two strong events for BG, the Falcons were ahead of the Redbirds, 96.375-95.800 as they moved onto the floor exercise. Christman had another great performance as she landed a career high 9.675 to tie for a second place finish. Guy put together a solid routine for a 9.650 and tied for a fourth place finish, while Fillmore was right behind her with a 9.625 and sixth place finish.
The Falcons finished the meet on the balance beam, which is the once event that has given the Falcons some difficulties this season. Follett led the Falcons as she recorded a season high 9.675, tying for second place. Fillmore was right behind her with a 9.650 in fourth place.
Guy competed in the all-around for BG posting a third place finish with a 37.800 on the night.
"I really liked how the team was focused and fighting for their skills throughout the meet," stated Beach. "It felt like the other team wasn't there and it was just us competing in the gym. We just have a few more things to work on and improve on."
The Falcons will return to Mid-American Conference competition as they continue their road trip against Eastern Michigan on Feb. 1 at 2:00 p.m.
