The Bowling Green men's basketball team scored 30 points in the paint, using an inside-outside game to beat Mid-American Conference foe Ball State 62-58 Wednesday night in Anderson Arena.
Otis Polk had 13 points and six rebounds, Chris Knight added nine points, and Erik Marschall came off the bench to score seven as the Falcons hammered the ball inside, building an early 11-point lead and holding on late.
BG jumped out to a 26-15 lead on a pair of Darryl Clements free-throws with 3:54 to play in the first half but Ball State made six of its final seven shot attempts of the half to cut the deficit to four at the break at 32-28.
Although Bowling Green never trailed in the second half, Ball State hung around, cutting a 50-42 deficit to one point with 3:41 to go on the strength of a 9-2 run. But Nate Miller scored on a three-point play on the Falcons' next possession and BGSU took a 57-53 lead with under two minutes to play.
With Bowling Green running clock, Ball State's Brandon Lampley stole a pass and seemingly had an uncontested lay-up. But his shot was rejected on an athletic move by Chris Knight and the Cardinals' comeback attempt was cut short.
Polk was the only BG player in double figures, scoring a season-high 13 on 5-of-5 shooting. The Falcons shot 56 percent in the second half and 50 percent for the game, just the second time this year BG has reached that mark. Knight, Clements and Scott Thomas each finished with nine points and Thomas equaled his career high with that total.
Ball State falls to 9-9 with the loss and 4-2 in MAC play, while Bowling Green's second consecutive win pushes its season record to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play. The Falcons will look to make it three straight at Northern Illinois Saturday at 5 p.m. eastern time.
