Falcons Use Team Effort To Defeat Eastern Michigan And End Skid

Bowling Green, Ohio – Five players finished with at least 10 kills and four had at least 10 digs as the Bowling Green volleyball team snapped a losing streak and defeated Eastern Michigan in five sets Friday evening – 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 15-8.
Alex Zlabis had a career-high 27 digs and three players equaled or set their career highs in kills as the Falcons battled back after losing the opening set. Kaitlin Jackson's 17 kills were her personal high and Noelle Spitler had a career-high 11. Shari Luther tied her all-time high with 17. As well, Ashley Herzberg set her career-high with 16 digs and Allison Kearney did the same with 59 assists.
After splitting the first four sets, Bowling Green hit .321 in the fifth, jumped on top early, and pulled away. Spitler had a pair of kills in a three-point stretch that put the Falcons on top 5-2 and forced Eastern Michigan to burn a timeout. The Eagles battled back to tie the score at 6-6 but Emily Kauth and Jackson added kills and Bowling Green went on top 9-6. A Luther kill made it 11-7 and Eastern Michigan used its final timeout but it only delayed the Falcons. Jackson followed the break with a kill and Zlabis followed up with a key ace. Luther posted a kill to make it 14-7 and, after an Eastern Michigan point, Jackson drilled her 17th kill of the match for the 15-8 win.
As a team, Bowling Green had 89 digs for the match, seven aces, and 6.5 blocks. The Falcons hit well in the three sets that they won, posting .238, .294, and .321 attack percentages in those frames, but BG hit just .053 and .143 in the first and fourth sets.
After losing the opening set 25-17, Bowling Green fell behind by as many as four points in the early going of the second stanza. But the Falcons battled back to tie the score at 14-14 and took their first lead at 17-16. Still leading 19-18, Bowling Green scored six of the final eight points of the set to tie the score.
Bowling Green jumped out early in the third set, grabbing a quick 8-2 lead behind five Luther kills. Eastern Michigan was not able to get closer than four until late in the set but Cassie Berning rallied the team with a kill that settled things down and made it 20-16. The Falcons scored five of the final six points to take that set.
With the loss, Eastern Michigan falls to 3-20 on the season and 2-5 in Mid-American Conference play. Bowling Green improves to 8-14 overall and 1-6 in conference action. The win was also Head Coach Denise Van De Walle's 495th of her career. The Falcons will look to make it two in a row Saturday afternoon as BG hosts Central Michigan at 3 p.m.
