On the final day of the 2009 Dayton Flyer Invitational, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team clawed its way back to contention through a 14-shot improvement over the first round, and the Falcons' score of 295 gave the team a third place finish in the tourney. It is Bowling Green's third top-five finish in just five tournaments this season.
Over the two days at the par-71, 7,055-yard South Course of the NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, the Orange and Brown shot a total of 604 (309-295). The Falcons came in just three shots behind second place Toledo (601) and eight shots behind tournament champion Ball State (596). Bowling Green's two other top-five finishes came at the John Piper Intercollegiate and the Earl Yestingsmeier Intercollegiate.
Malone University (606) and Ohio University (608) rounded out the tournament's top five teams.
The Falcons saw individual success in Kettering, as well. Sophomore Drew Preston continued his stellar play by earning his third top-five finish of the season. It is his fourth top-15 finish; in fact, Preston hasn't finished lower than 21st in any tournament this season. Preston tied for fifth at the Flyer Invitational by carding a two-day total of 149 (76-73). Preston, part of a five-way tie for fifth, was just one shot behind the fourth-place finisher (Jean-Hubert Trahan, Toledo) and two shots behind the third-place finisher (Zac Henderson, Ball State).
Not to be outdone, senior Matt Schneider and freshman Wes Gates shot identical rounds of 77 and 74 to finish at 151. They are in a tie for 16th place with six other participants. For Schneider, it is his sixth consecutive top-20 finish dating back to last season. Gates earned his third top-20 finish of the season.
John Powers, also a senior, placed a solid 29th in the 99-player field. His score of 154 (80-74) was only three shots behind the pace set by Schneider and Gates.
Sophomore Parker Hewit's 157 (79-78) gave him a tie for 50th place.
Justin Lower of Malone University (142) was the tournament medalist. Eric Steger of Ball State placed second.
One additional highlight of the tournament occurred on the second day, as a hole in one was scored on the course's par-3, 204-yard 13th hole.
The Falcons now have a week off before resuming play on Monday, November 1st and Tuesday, November 2nd at the Renaissance Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida. That tournament will be the final one on Bowling Green's fall schedule. The team will begin their spring schedule on March 8th, 2010.
