LaMonta Stone Named Fourth-Best Mid-Major Assistant Coach By HoopScoop
October 23, 2009 | Men's Basketball
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Men's Basketball Assistant Coach LaMonta Stone has been named the fourth-best mid-major assistant coach in the country by HoopScoop.
Clark Francis, editor and publisher of HoopScoopOnline.com, rates coaches in a variety of categories and Stone was the top MAC assistant coach among mid-major schools. Virginia Commonwealth's Tony Pujol led the list, followed by Long Beach State's Eric Brown, Illinois-Chicago's Tracy Dildy and Stone.
Stone helped lead the Bowling Green program to the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division title in 2008-09 and the top seed for the MAC Tournament. The Falcons advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) where the team lost a hard-fought 73-71 opening round game to top seed Creighton on the road in one of the more hostile environments in the country.
Under Orr and Stone, the 2008-09 team became a mentally tough unit, winning six consecutive road conference games and finishing 19-14, a six-win improvement over the previous season.
In his first season at Bowling Green, Stone helped produce a similar turnaround. The 2004-05 squad went 18-11, a four-win improvement over the previous season. The team advanced to the second round of the MAC Tournament that season, beating Ball State 74-72 in the first round.
A native of Detroit, Stone came to Bowling Green after serving two seasons as an assistant at Ohio State under Jim O'Brien. He was also an assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years, working under Jim Boone.
Earlier this year, College Insider named Stone as the No. 15 mid-major assistant coach.
