Falcons Fall Short Against Rival Toledo

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team split the first two sets at rival Toledo Saturday afternoon but was unable to overcome an efficient Rocket offense as the Falcons lost in four sets 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22.
Toledo hit just .176 and .159 in the first two sets but turned it up and hit .357 and .400 in the final two frames to notch the victory. The win overshadowed strong performances from Shari Luther (13 kills and a .429 attack percentage) and Alex Zlabis (24 digs). As well, Allison Kearny had 44 assists and 15 digs to post a double-double.
After dropping the opening set, Bowling Green built an early 18-13 lead in the second but Toledo stormed back to tie the score at 21-21 and again two points later. Tied at 22-22, the Falcons scored two consecutive points, the second on a kill from Luther, to get two set point opportunities. But a Toledo block and an attack error, the score was again tied at 24-24 but the Falcons picked up a Noelle Spitler kill and a Sam Fish ace to close out the stanza.
Bowling Green jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the third set but Toledo chipped away at the deficit and took the lead for good on an Amber DeWeerdt kill that made it 16-15 Rockets. The Falcons got no closer than two points the rest of the way.
In the final set, Bowling Green hung close for most of the set, trailing by just one as late as 18-17. But Toledo scored four of the next five points to close out the match.
The Falcons hit .224 for the match and out-dug Toledo 72-69. Along with Zlabis' 24 digs and Kearney's 15 digs, Corey Domek added 11. Kaitlin Jackson equaled Luther's team-high of 13 kills and Spitler added 10 and a .304 attack percentage.
Toledo improves to 14-8 overall and 5-5 in MAC play with the win and Bowling Green falls to 9-16 overall and 2-8 with the loss. The Falcons will be back on the road next weekend as the team plays at Buffalo Friday at 7 p.m. and at Akron the same time Saturday.
