For the first time in three tries during the 2009-10 season, the Bowling Green State University women's golf team was able to complete an entire tournament with no weather cancellations, as the Falcons placed 15th at the 34th annual Nittany Lion Invitational.
The ladies of the Orange and Brown tallied a final score of 990 (333-328-329) for the three rounds of the tournament, which was hosted by Penn State at PSU's par-72, 6300-yard Blue Course. Bowling Green came in ahead of Monmouth University (1087), while they finished behind Bucknell University, who came in 14th with a score of 975.
Rollins College won the tournament, while host Penn State finished second. Fellow MAC schools Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan tied for third place, and defending champion William & Mary rounded out the top of the leaderboard by placing fifth this year.
Individually, freshman Susannah Grunden continued the good start to her initial campaign with the Falcons by scoring the low round of the tournament for the Falcons. Grunden's final round of 77 gave her a final score 240 (79-84-77). That tied her for 42nd place in the field of 90 players. Her two sub-80 rounds were also tops on the team for the tournament; she now has three sub-80 rounds out of five total for the season.
Pennsylvania native and Falcon junior Lauren Glew also tied for 42nd and shared top Falcon honors with Grunden. Glew's 280 (82-78-80) is her best 54-hole score since she carded a 238 at last year's Zippy Invitational.
Seniors Hannah Lambert (254) and Megan Gormley (258), as well as junior and fellow Pennsylvania native Marisa Glew (261), rounded out the scoring for Bowling Green.
Emily Ransone of Penn State took top individual honors for the tournament. One highlight of the tournament in general was a hole-in-one carded by Bucknell's Minjoo Lee on the par-three 8th hole during the first round on Saturday.
Tha Falcons now travel to Fairlawn, Ohio for the second annual Zippy Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the University of Akron, will be played at the par-72, 6,060-yard Fairlawn Country Club.
The tourney consists of 54 holes over two days. On Monday, October 5th, teams will have a shotgun start at 8:30am and will play 36 holes over two rounds. On Tuesday, October 6th, the final 18 holes will be played with a shotgun start at 9:00am.
Sixteen teams will participate this year. Host Akron, as well as Ohio University and Toledo, will participate from the MAC. The other participants are Ashland University, Cleveland State, Dayton, Detroit Mercy, Eastern Kentucky, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Niagara, Robert Morris, Walsh University, and Youngstown State.
Last year, the Falcons finished seventh out of 12 teams at the Zippy Invitational. Twin sisters Lauren and Marisa Glew both posted one of their better tourneys of the season, each finishing in the top 20.
A full recap and stats from each day will be available immediately after the conclusion of play on each day.
