DAY ONE RESULTS
The Bowling Green State University men's golf team faces a tough field at the 2009 Xavier Invitational, but the Falcons used a strong second round to finish the day in a sixth place tie, within striking distance of the tournament's top five.
Bowling Green finished the day with a six-over-par 582. After beginning the day slowly with a 296 in the first round, the team charged to a two-under-par 286 in the second round to build momentum for a final round push to the top of the leaderboard. The Falcons are tied with Dayton. Fellow MAC schools Ohio (584) and Ball State (585) are just behind the Falcons in eighth and ninth place, respectively.
In order to secure a third team championship in three tries this season, the Falcons will have to catch Akron, who leads the tournament after day one. Akron posted a nine-under-par 567 for the day. Big East foe Marquette follows closely behind in second place with a first-day score of 569. Host school Xavier (573) is third at three-under-par, while Eastern Kentucky shot an even-par 576 for fourth place. DePaul, another Big East school, is fifth after the first day with a score of 577, five shots ahead of Bowling Green.
Individually, sophomore Parker Hewit is having another great showing at the Oasis Golf Club in Loveland, Ohio. His first day team-low score of 143 is good for a 14th-place tie. At one-under-par, Hewit stands six shots behind tournament leader Russell Budd of DePaul. Budd carded a 137 for the day. In last year's Xavier Invitational, Hewit had one of the better outings of his freshman campaign, placing 24th with a score of 216.
Fresh off his victory at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, Drew Preston is continuing his solid play. Preston carded even-par scores of 72 in both of the day's rounds. His 144 is good for a 21st place tie, and he stands just seven shots behind the tourney leader. Of Preston's 36 holes on Monday, ten resulted in birdies. Only six players out of the field of 70 had more, and none had more than 12.
Senior Matt Schneider posted the team low score of the day for an individual round. His second-round mark of 69 propelled Schneider back into the top 30 after a slow start to the tournament. Schneider enters the final day nine shots behind the leader, with a score of 146.
Freshman Wes Gates (151) and senior John Powers (156) rounded out the field of participants for the Falcons.
This three-round tournament resumes on Tuesday, October 6th with a shotgun start at 8:30am. Final results and a full recap will be posted after completion of play in the final round.
