FINAL RESULTS
Bowling Green State University's women's golf team has had its share of ups and downs in the early stages of the 2009-10 season. However, one thing about the team is indisputable; freshman Susannah Grunden is making an immediate impact.
In just the fourth tournament of her career, Grunden has won tournament medalist honors at the second annual Zippy Invitational. Grunden's victory is the third during head coach Stephanie Young's tenure at Bowling Green and is the first for a Falcon since Jessica McCann and Carley Hrusovsky shared top honors at the 2008 Falcon Invitational. Grunden's final 54-hole score of 226 (77-73-76) is tied for third best in BGSU history. Kris McKelvey shot a 225 during the 1981-82 season, and Jenny Schnipke carded a 221 at the Nittany Lion Invitational during the 2003-04 season.
Grunden now has a season average of 78 through 8 rounds. If she continues to stay on this pace, Grunden would break the school record for season average. The current record is held by Schnipke (78.54) during the 2003-04 season.
Grunden finished three shots ahead of Erica Rivard of Toledo, who carded a 229. Ashley Smith of Grand Valley State (230) finished third. Eastern Kentucky's Lisanne Schmidt (231) finished fourth, while two competitiors from host school Akron and Ohio University shared fifth place with a score of 232.
As a team, Bowling Green improved from 11th place after the first round to tie for ninth place with Detroit Mercy. The Falcons' second round score of 319 was 24 shots better than their first round score. Bowling Green closed the tournament with a third round 329 for a final tally of 991.
The Falcons and Titans finished ten shots ahead of 11th place Ferris State. Cleveland State, Robert Morris, Walsh University, and Niagara University all finished behind Bowling Green in the 15-team field.
Helping the Orange and Brown to a top-ten finish was junior Lauren Glew, whose second-round 76 propelled her to a tie for 40th with a tally of 251. Senior Hannah Lambert tied for 56th with a 255, while junior Marisa Glew and senior Megan Gormley each carded a 262.
Grand Valley State, who led the tournament after one round, maintained their lead to take top team honors. Tournament-host Akron finished third. The tournament was held at the par-72, 6,060-yard Fairlawn Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio.
Bowling Green's next action will take place at the Mid-American Conference Preview. That tournament will take place next Monday and Tuesday, October 12th and 13th. It will be held in Fishers, Indiana.
