The Bowling Green State University men's golf team is playing their final tournament of their fall schedule this weekend at the Renaissance Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida. After the first 36 holes of the two-day, 54-hole event, the Falcons are currently in 12th place, while sophomore Parker Hewit leads Falcon individuals in 22nd place.
At The Club at Renaissance's par-72, 7,026-yard course, the Orange and Brown posted rounds of 296 and 294 for a first-day total of 590. However, with a solid third round, the Falcons can climb in the standings. Western Kentucky, in 11th place, sits only three shots ahead of Bowling Green. The Falcons are also within 11 shots or better of tenth-place Marshall (583), ninth-place Eastern Kentucky (580) and eighth-place Troy (579).
The Falcons have a foundation to build from; on the course's four par-three holes, Bowling Green posted an even par score for the day. Only Indiana's four-under-par score was better among the tournament participants.
The Camels of Campbell University lead the tournament after two rounds, with a score of 550. Campbell, along with second-place Indiana (551) and third place Penn State (558), shared the low round of the tournament as each posted rounds of 271 during the day's play.
Individually, Parker Hewit posted the Falcons best score of the day, as he shot a 69 in the second round. That score gave Hewit a total of 143 for the day. At one-under-par, he is tied for 22nd place. Hewit is just three shots behind the group tied for 10th place, and he is seven shots behind the group tied for fifth place at 136.
Senior John Powers is tied for 42nd after the first day, as he managed rounds of 73 and 75 for a total of 148. Right behind Powers is sophomore Drew Preston. Preston (73-76) carded a 149 and is tied for 44th place.
Senior Matt Schneider and freshman Wes Gates are both tied for 50th after totaling 151 for the day. Each had rounds of 76 and 75.
Indiana's Alex Martin, Liberty's Robert Karlsson and Campbell's Matt Moot are in a three-way tie for first place with an 11-under-par score of 133. Eric Steger of Ball State, in ninth place, carded the low round of the tournament so far with a 64 in the second round.
Bowling Green will wrap up the tournament and the fall schedule tomorrow with 18 holes, starting at 8:00am ET. A full recap and final stats will be posted shortly after the completion of play.
