Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team had its season come to an end Friday afternoon in a 25-22, 25-23, 25-20 loss to Miami (Ohio) in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals. For seniors Corey Domek, Shari Luther, and Kaitlin Jackson, it marked the completion of their four-year careers at Bowling Green.
The Falcons entered the MAC Tournament as the No. 11 seed and upset No. 6 seed Toledo in the first round Tuesday night before the loss to No. 3 seed Miami. After starting MAC play by losing six consecutive matches, Bowling Green never gave in and went 5-5 in conference play the rest of the way. Head Coach Denise Van De Walle became the first coach in MAC history to win 500 career matches with the team's win over Toledo in the MAC Tournament.
Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) hooked up for the third time this year and the RedHawks came away with the season sweep in a hard-fought match. The Falcons were tied 21-21 in the first set, led 22-19 in the second, and were tied 20-20 in the third. Miami, however, was able to come away with clutch points late in all three sets for the win.
Seniors Domek and Jackson combined for nine of the team's 16 kills in the opening set to give Miami a battle. But at 21-21, the RedHawks had three consecutive kills, the last two from Megan Griffin, to pull away.
Domek had six more kills in the second set as Bowling Green was the aggressor early, building at seven-point lead at 12-5. But Miami stormed back to take the set by scoring six of the final seven points on three kills and a pair of blocks.
BG battled from behind in the third set to take an 18-17 lead and the set was tied at 20-20 until Miami went on a five-point run that closed the match. Michelle Metzler had two kills and a block on the final three points for the RedHawks.
Bowling Green hit an uncharacteristically low .096 for the match, including attack percentages of .000 for each of the final two sets. The Falcons also had 11 less digs than Miami and the RedHawks had 11.0 team blocks.
Domek completed her career with a team-high 14 kills and Alex Zlabis added 20 digs, reaching that total for the fourth time in the last five matches. Luther ended with a team-high six blocks.
Bowling Green's season comes to a close at 13-20 overall and the Falcons went 5-11 in MAC play.
