Barnes, Zlabis Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
November 23, 2009 | General
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Freddie Barnes and volleyball player Alex Zlabis.
Male Athlete of the Week
Freddie Barnes, a senior wide receiver from Chicago Heights, Ill., had 12 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns as Bowling Green beat Akron 36-20 to become bowl eligible. Barnes scored both of his touchdowns in the third quarter as the Falcons erased a 10-9 halftime deficit and took control. It was the seventh time this year Barnes had at least 10 catches and the eighth time that he went over 100 yards receiving.
Female Athlete of the Week
Alex Zlabis, a junior volleyball player from Wheaton, Ill., received the award for the second consecutive week after reaching the 30-dig club for the second time in three matches. She had 31 digs as Bowling Green upset rival Toledo in the opening round of the MAC Tournament, giving Head Coach Denise Van De Walle her 500th career victory. Zlabis followed it up with 20 digs in a loss to Miami (Ohio) in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals but her 6.38 digs per set ranked second among all players in the MAC Tournament.
