Towson, Md. – Bowling Green men's basketball player Otis Polk dominated the paint Wednesday night, finishing with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds as the Falcons edged out Towson 70-69.
Polk helped Bowling Green to a 45-35 rebounding advantage and his scoring sparked the Falcons throughout, but his most impactful play came in the final seconds. Clinging to a 70-69 lead, Bowling Green was unable to get a pass inbounds with three seconds left and Towson took possession under its own basket with an opportunity to win the game. But Polk intercepted a lob pass in the paint to seal the victory.
Bowling Green built an eight-point halftime lead and then pushed the advantage to as many as 15 in the second half. Scott Thomas' three-pointer with 5:31 remaining gave the Falcons a 65-52 lead but Bowling Green would not make another field goal.
Towson's Jarrel Smith made back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to seven and Troy Franklin followed with a trifecta with 1:51 left to make it 65-61. After a Dee Brown free-throw, Franklin made a pair of free-throws with 1:10 left to make it 66-63.
Joe Jakubowski then made 3-of-4 free-throws on two trips to the charity stripe and Brown made another with 20 seconds left as the Falcons looked in control at 70-63. But Josh Thornton hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left and the Falcons missed two free-throws with 10 seconds left. Thornton was fouled attempting a three-pointer with three seconds left and he made all three. That set up the final exchange of possessions.
Polk's 17 points led the team and tied his career-high. Brown added 15 points, Jakubowski had 12 and Thomas finished with 10. Erik Marschall had six points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Bowling Green shot 47 percent from the field, had two less turnovers and held that 10-rebound advantage.
Towson falls to 3-7 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 6-5, including a 3-2 record on the Falcons' five-game road stretch. BGSU will host St. Louis Saturday at 7 p.m. in the team's final non-conference game before starting Mid-American Conference play.
