EAST LANSING, Mich. (BGSUFalcons.com) - Host Michigan State University knocked the Bowling Green State Univeresity tennis team from the ranks of the unbeaten Saturday afternoon (Feb. 21), posting a 7-0 win over a short-handed Falcon squad. The non-conference dual match was held at the MSU Tennis Facility.
With the win, the nationally-ranked Spartans improved to 5-4 on the season, while dropping the Falcons to 5-1.
The Falcons, due to an injury to sophomore Christine Chiricosta, were forced to forfeit the third-flight doubles and sixth-flight singles matches. In doubles action, the Spartans picked up an 8-3 win over seniors Kelsey Jakupcin and Stefanie Menoff at the top flight.
At the second level, Falcon juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel battled MSU's team of Stephanie Kebler and Christine Milliken to a tiebreaker, before the Spartan duo posted a narrow 7-5 win in that 'breaker.
In singles action, the Spartans won in straight sets at all five flights to salt away the win. With Chiricosta out, Kintzel, Babina, Menoff and senior Libby Harrison each moved up one spot in head coach Penny Dean's lineup. Jakupcin remained at the top flight, as has been the case all season.
The Falcons conclude a two-match Michigan swing in the Motor City, taking on the University of Detroit Mercy on Sunday evening (Feb. 22) at 6:00 p.m.
