A Long Day For The Falcons In Fourth Game Of Spring Trip

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. - The Bowling Green State University baseball team, after three games in three days, was a little short on pitchers and Connecticut took full advantage Tuesday afternoon banging out 16 hits on their way to a 21-6 win over the Falcons at Chain Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Fla.
In addition to their hits, UConn also took advantage of seven walks and three hit batsmen as nine of those 10 extra base runners came around to score.
Bowling Green started first baseman Brian Hangbers on the mound who has 35 career appearances on the mound covering 89 innings. He went three innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs. But, the Falcons could get only four innings out of there next three relief pitchers before sophomore infielder/outfielder Clay Duncan, who had not pitched before at the collegiate level, had to be summoned for the final inning and he got the side out in order with two strikeouts.
Both teams scored a run in the opening inning as the Falcons opened the game with a tally on an RBI single by junior third baseman Derek Spencer with two outs to drive in junior Tyler Elkins, who was playing first base today, who had doubled with one out. The Huskies came right back to score on a double and a triple in their half of the first.
The Huskies took the lead for good with three runs in the second on two extra-base hits, three walks, an error and an interference call.
The Falcons go two of those runs back in the third on an error, a walk, an RBI single from junior second baseman Logan Meisler and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of junior Mark Galvin.
After UConn plated one run in the half of the third and the Falcons went in order in their half of the fourth, Connecticut put the game away with six runs on three hits in the fourth with the key blows a two-run double and a two-run single sandwiched around a pair of walks.
After the Falcons scored two runs in the fifth on a fielder's choice and a bases loaded walk, the Huskies struck for eight runs in the sixth. UConn had six hits, including a two-run home run and a triple, in the inning and were the beneficiaries of two hit batters, one walk and a BG error.
The Falcons pushed across a run in the seventh on a triple from freshman Patrick Martin and an RBI single by Galvin. UConn scored two more runs in their half of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Elkins was the only BG player with multiple hits as he had a pair of safeties and scored three runs.
Sophomores Kyle Atkinson, Richie O'Brien and Dan Parsons also pitched for Bowling Green.
Bowling Green will now have a day to rest before resuming their schedule on Thursday at 9 a.m. against Sacred Heart. BG will play a single game Friday at 10 a.m. against Northern Iowa before completing their spring trip with two games Saturday - a 9 a.m. contest against Indiana followed by a 12:30 game with Bradley. BG's game with Northern Iowa will be played in Lakeland, Fla. at Henley Field. That is the only game on BG's spring trip schedule that will not be played at the Chain O' Lakes Complex in Winter Haven.
