Falcons Soar to Second at Quad-Meet in Texas

DENTON, Texas - Head coach Kerrie Beach and the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team finished the regular season with a second place finish at the quad-meet hosted by Texas Women's University this evening (March 13). The Falcons only finished behind No. 11 Arkansas (196.550) and ahead of Texas Women's University (193.000) and Penn (190.600).
Not only was this the Falcons second best team score on the season but also marked the first meet this season where they posted a 48 or better on every event, including a season high 48.775 on vault, three tenths higher than their previous season best. The Orange and Brown recorded at least one top-10 finish in every event with a total of nine during the meet, including two top-five finishes.
Although the Falcons had a well rounded meet the highlight of the competition was the team's season high 48.775 score on vault with five gymnasts recording a 9.700 or better. Leading the way for BG was senior Jenna Wirtanen sticking a 9.800 and seventh place finish, tying her career high. Right behind her were teammates Breanne Guy landing a 9.775 and ninth place finish, Jholeen Ponce and Andrea Kinzer each posting a 9.750 and tying for 10th place. Queenita Gamble recorded a career high 9.700, while Morgan Balzer matched her career high 9.625.
The Falcons also recorded their third best score on floor this season with a 48.475. Leading the Orange and Brown line-up on floor were Blazer, Wirtanen and Kasey Fillmore each tumbling their way to a 9.725, tying for an eighth place finish. Wirtanen's 9.725 matched her career high on floor. Rounding out the top finishers for the Falcons on floor were Guy with a 9.675 and Gamble with a 9.625.
BG posted their highest individual finish on the balance beam, which was one of the toughest events for the Falcons this season as a team. Gamble led the Falcons with a career high 9.800 tying for a third place finish. Rounding out the top finishers for BG were Ponce, Wirtanen and Guy each recording a 9.600.
Leading the way on bars for the Falcons was Guy swinging her way to a 9.800 tying for fourth place. Rounding out the top finishers for BG were Amber Brewer with a 9.625 tying for 11th and Jholeen Ponce with a 9.600 tying for 13th.
Guy finished fifth in the all-around competition with a 38.850.
The Falcons finished the 2009 regular season 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference with a season high team score of 193.750 against Ohio State (Feb. 22). The Orange and Brown will now head to Muncie, Indiana for the MAC Championships on Sunday (March 21) at 2:00 p.m.
