
Gymnastics Takes Fourth at MAC Championships

MUNCIE, Indiana - The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team wrapped up their season in Muncie, Indiana this afternoon (March 21) at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship. The Falcons finished fourth recording the highest team finish and best team score since 2005 with a 192.425 just 0.25 points shy of third place finishers Northern Illinois. Kent State took home their second straight MAC Championship (194.500) followed by Central Michigan in second (194.375), Northern Illinois in third (192.700).
The Falcons posted two top-10 finishes along with Breanne Guy tying for third place in the all-around and earning second team All-MAC honors.
"I was very pleased with our fourth place finish tonight after finishing last the past two seasons," said head coach Kerrie Beach. "Tonight was definitely a whole team effort and we took one event at a time and stayed focused on each rotation."
The Falcons started out the MAC Championship on the balance beam. Guy led the Falcons beaming her way to a 9.75 tying for a third place. Next up for the Orange and Brown was Queenita Gamble scoring a 9.625. Not too far behind was Jholeen Ponce sticking her landing for a 9.55. In her last performance as a Falcon Katie Follett scored a 9.475. Rounding out the first rotation was Kasey Fillmore with a 9.275.
The next rotation for the Orange and Brown was the floor exercise. First to take the floor for the Falcons was Molly McKinnon with a 9.55. Morgan Balzer and Kasey Fillmore had great performances which led to scores of 9.7. Jenna Wirtanen matched her career high of a 9.725 with her floor routine as she led the floor line-up. Finishing up for the Falcons was Guy tumbling her way to a 9.625.
After a short bye, the Falcons moved onto the vault where they continued to put up great scores. After missing several meets due to injury, Dawn Christman tied her career high landing a 9.75. Ponce also stuck a 9.75 on vault to help lead the Falcon squad. Andrea Kinzer vaulted her way to 9.675; followed by Wirtanen with a 9.65 and Guy 9.625.
The Falcons finished up the MAC Championships on the bars. Ponce ended her collegiate career with a 9.325. Megan Chronister and Lexi Psichopaidas continued on the bars with 9.5 and 9.525, respectively. Amber Brewer and Fillmore swung their way to 9.6 each. Guy wrapped up the bars for the Falcons with a 9.725 tying for ninth and her second top-10 finish of the meet. Guy tied for a third place finish in the all-around competition for the Falcons compiling a score of 38.725 also earning her second consecutive All-MAC honor on the second team.
"She is a stand out athlete and represents us well," said head coach Kerrie Beach on Guy qualifying for the NCAA regionals and a third place finish on the beam.
After a very successful season for the BGSU gymnastics team the Falcons will await their fate for the NCAA regionals, which will be announced in the upcoming days.
