BGSUFalcons.com Relaunches!
June 23, 2009 | General
Welcome to the all-new BGSUFalcons.com! This is the culmination of a long process with input and help from many people. While we know there will be an adjustment phase in getting used to the new layout of the site, we have put together a great site for fans of Bowling Green athletics to get information.
After taking a number of months to determine what company would design and host our new site, we chose ICS Sidearm. Starting in early February, we began the design process of the site. At that time, we determined a few key ingredients to our new site.
1 – Clutter-free: Anyone who visited the old site knows that there was way too much clutter. There were ads everywhere of all shapes and sizes. Things were put all over the site with no real rhyme or reason. We wanted to make sure that the new site was less convoluted but that we could still have everything on the site that was there before. We still have ads on the new site but they are less obtrusive and are consistent size and format.
2 – Organization: Going along with the clutter free side of things, we wanted to make sure that the navigation was organized and easy to use. On the new site, you can still get to each individual sport with one click, but now you can also get to any schedule, roster, or stat file with one click from any page on the site.
3 – First Impression: We wanted a site that popped. While I think that this idea can be subjective, we've had great response from those who have had the opportunity to see the site design over the past month or so. We wanted big bold pictures for our top stories and I think the way we've put together the site draws people into those stories.
4 – Focus: The old site tried to be everything to everybody. That fact seemed to feed into the clutter. On this site, we are trying to cater to two main groups – our fans and our recruits. We still have a long way to go in tailoring the site to show recruits why BGSU is a great place to spend the next four (or more) years of their lives but that is something that will be high on the list of items we continue to build upon.
5 – Video: Video is at the very top of our priority list for improvements to make on BGSUFalcons.com. It's not going to happen all at once and it's going to take some time to really do it right, but we want to provide our fans with as much video content (both highlights/features and live streaming video) as possible.
With all that said, we've got a ton of cool new or redesigned features on the site. I'd like to point some of them out to you.
1 – E-Newsletter: Sign up for the E-newsletter to receive an e-mail every Monday with the stories and highlights of the past week.
2 – Text Messages: Sign up for our text messaging service to receive scores and news about major events on your cell phone.
3 – Twitter: The BGSU athletic department now has an official twitter account updated by the athletic communications department. Follow us at twitter.com/bgathletics to receive daily news and notes about the athletic department. And sometimes you'll also get our random ponderings about the world of sports.
4 – Blog: It's not quite up and running yet, but we will have an official athletic department blog in the near future. We're hopeful that we'll get coaches and administrators from all areas of athletics (and maybe from some other areas as well) to chime in with their thoughts on the blog.
5 – Live Stats: With a new web host comes a brand new look to live stats. While you won't be able to see anything now, once the fall starts, get on the live stats when you can't be at the game to follow how the Falcons are doing.
6 – Photo Galleries: We'll be bringing you a lot more photo galleries with a whole new look. We've got a couple of sample galleries up there now for you to see how they'll look.
7 – Tickets: We've got a much more user-friendly ticket section. Get your tickets online ahead of time on a site that's a lot easier to navigate through.
8 – Store: It's one of the few things that didn't quite make the launch deadline, but very shortly a whole new store will be up and running. Get that new apparel in time for BG's football home opener against Troy Sept. 3!
9 – Beefed up stats: For many of our sports, you can now view the last eight or nine years of stats. If we had them on a computer somewhere, they are now up there.
There's a lot of other little things throughout the site. I invite you to explore it. A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work to make this site a reality. If you can't find something on the new site or you have questions or comments about it, I'd love to hear them. Feel free to e-mail me at jknavel@bgsu.edu and let me know what you think.
Thank you!
