Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team split two matches during day two of the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational, losing to a strong Northern Iowa team before defeating Robert Morris Saturday. BGSU lost to Northern Iowa 25-19, 25-23, 25-18 and defeated Robert Morris 25-14, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21. Freshman setter Allison Kearney was named to the all-tournament team.
In the opening match of the day, Bowling Green hit .096 as a Northern Iowa squad receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll beat the Falcons in three sets – 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.
With the opening set tied at 14-14, Northern Iowa scored four consecutive points, getting three consecutive blocks, to build a lead. The Falcons got back within two on kills from Cassie Berning and Shari Luther but the team could get no closer.
Bowling Green's best chance came in the second set as the Falcons took control midway through the stanza with eight consecutive points to take a 14-9 lead. A Luther kill, block assists from Emily Kauth and Berning, and an ace from Alex Zlabis put Bowling Green on top 20-14, forcing Northern Iowa to burn a timeout. The Panthers came out from the break and scored five consecutive points and eventually took a 22-21 lead on a Michelle Burow kill. Leading 24-23, Beth Discher put down a Bre Payton assist to give Northern Iowa a come-from-behind victory.
In the third set, Northern Iowa scored eight of the first 10 points and never looked back. The Falcons could get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Luther finished with a team-high 11 kills and added four blocks with a .346 attack percentage. Allison Kearney had a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs while Kaitlin Jackson led the team with 13 digs and added three blocks.
In the final match of the evening, Bowling Green hit .483 in the opening set and .425 in the second set to set the tone early. The Falcons rolled to victories on those two stanzas before Head Coach Denise Van De Walle went to the bench for the third set. Bowling Green hung tough in that frame but came up on the short end of the score. In set four, the Falcons hit a respectable .275 to finish off the match.
Emily Kauth had one of the best matches of her career, finishing with 18 kills and a .500 attack percentage. Freshman Cassie Berning added 13 kills, while Kaitlin Jackson and Shari Luther had 10 each. Susie Isphording led the team with 11 digs and Alex Zlabis finished with just one less.
"The weekend didn't really go as planned but we're still learning and growing each time we hit the floor," Van De Walle said. "We had some great individual performances over all three matches like Emily Kauth, Cassie Berning, Allison Kearney, and Shari Luther tonight. We just need to be more consistent at the net and control the ball better. We'll continue to work hard to get ready for the Ohio State Tournament this weekend."
Robert Morris falls to 3-8 with the loss and Bowling Green improves to 7-3. The Falcons have the week off before competing in the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic Friday and Saturday.
