The Bowling Green State University women's golf team opens the 2009-10 season on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20,as they travel to Waynesville, NC for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, hosted by Western Carolina University.
The Great Smokies Intercollegiate is a two-day, 36-hole tournament, and 24 teams will participate. This year's entrants are: Alabama-Birmingham, Appalachian State, Austin Peay, Belmont, Charleston Southern, the Citadel, Elon, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Mercer, Mobile, Morehead State, Old Dominion, Presbyterian, Radford, Samford, SCAD, Tennessee Tech, USC-Upstate, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky, William & Mary, and Winthrop.
Stephanie Young enters her fifth season as head coach of the Falcons. Last year in their opening tournament, the Falcons set a school record for best team score in a single round with a 298 in the final round of the Laker Fall Classic. This year, BGSU looks to start with a similar flourish. Young's squad has an excellent balance of youth and experience. The nine-player roster includes two seniors, three juniors, one sophomore, and three freshmen.
Shoreview, Minnesota native Megan Gormley begins her final season with the Falcons as the team's lowest returning scorer. Gormley posted a 81.79 average through 29 rounds last year and shot a career low 74 during the Laker Fall Classic. Gormley posted six other sub-80 rounds during the season, and she placed in the top five of two different tournaments. Her fourth place finish at the Falcon Invitational was her best of the year, while she also placed in a tie for fifth at the Huskie Classic.
Fellow senior Hannah Lambert, a Brook Park, Ohio native, compiled an 87.07 average in 29 rounds during the 2008-09 season. Lambert's season-best finish came at the Huskie Classic, where she placed in a tie for 13th. However, Lambert's best tournament may have been the following week, at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational. In that tourney, Lambert completed two of her three sub-80 rounds for the season and also posted her season-low score of 74.
Twin sisters Lauren and Marisa Glew, who hail from Gibsonia, PA, return for their third campaign with the Falcons.
Lauren finished the 2008-09 season with an 82.86 average, good for second-best on the team. She had six sub-80 rounds for the year; at the Nittany Lion Invitational, Glew shot better than 80 in all three rounds. Her score of 232 (77-76-79) led to a tie for 16th. The previous week, at the Laker Classic, Glew posted a second-round 75, her best round of the year. Glew also two top-ten finishes; one came at the Zippy Invitational at Rosemont, the other at the Huskie Classic.
Not to be outdone, Marisa totaled an 83.72 average last season. For the year, Glew posted six sub-80 rounds of her own. Her 155 (77-78) at the Cardinal Classic included her best round of the season. Glew also had three top 20 finishes during the campaign. She finished tied for 20th at the Huskie Classic, tied for 16th at the Zippy Invitational at Rosemont, and in 18th place at the Falcon Invitational in Bowling Green last April.
Also entering her third season with the Falcons is Megan Bader. Bader's claim to fame during the 2008-09 season was a second-round 71 in the season-opening Laker Classic. That round was the second-lowest in school history. However, that was not all Bader accomplished; Bader's 84.07 season average included five sub-80 rounds. Two of those sub-80 rounds came at the Huskie Classic, where her 156 (79-77) was good for a second-place tie. Her performance, combined with her teammates, gave the Falcons a second-place finish in team play at the Huskie Classic. At the Falcon Invitational in April, Bader shot 162 (81-81) to finish in a tie for seventh.
Sophomore Paula DiFrancesco is looking to build on a successful freshman season. She averaged 85.96 through 24 rounds during the 2008-09 season. Two of those were sub-80 rounds. Her career low came at the Cardinal Classic, where she notched a first-round 78. DiFrancesco then matched that round with another 78 in the third round of the LPGA International Xavier Invitational. Her best finish came at the Huskie Classic, where she tied for 20th, joining five other teammates in the top 20 of that tournament. DiFrancesco also carded an 82 in the second round of the Falcon Invitational.
The Falcons welcome three new players into the fold as freshmen for the 2009-10 season.
Jennifer Blanchard is a Fishers, Indiana native. Blanchard was a three-year letter-winner at Hamilton Southeastern High School. During her senior season, she helped lead her team to the IHSAA state championship, finishing 33rd individually.
Susannah Grunden comes to Bowling Green via Krum, Texas. While at Denton Calvary Academy, Grunden was ranked 14th in Texas and 200th nationally for the 2009 graduating class by Junior Golf Scoreboard. At the Texas Junior Golf Tour's Red River Challenge, Grunden carded a 36-hole score of 147 (73-74).
Rounding out the freshman class is Amy Ruthenberg, who is from East Lansing, Michigan. A graduate of Okemos High School, Ruthenberg finished tenth at the MHSAA state championship (80-75) and the Hudson Junior Invitational (76-87-80).
The Falcons will field five players for this weekend's tournament: Lauren Glew, Marisa Glew, Susannah Grunden, Megan Gormley, and Hannah Lambert.
