Falcons Lose To Xavier In Three Sets

Columbus, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball team completed play at the Ohio State Sports Imports Classic Saturday, losing to Xavier in three hard-fought sets – 25-20, 28-26, 25-23.

The Falcons fell behind early in the opening set and were never able to get back within striking range but Bowling Green played better during the second frame. With the score tied at 15-15, the Falcons went on a 6-2 run capped by an Allison Kearney ace to take a 21-17 lead. Xavier, though, scored the next four points to tie the match and the two teams battled back-and-forth. With the score tied at 26-26, Xavier's Michelle Matia and Emily Mayers had back-to-back kills and the Musketeers won the set.
In the third set, Bowling Green jumped out quickly with the first four points but the teams stayed close throughout the rest of the stanza. At 21-21, Mayers posted a kill for Xavier and a BGSU attack error made it 23-21 in favor of the Musketeers. Kaitlin Jackson posted kills on two of the next three points to cut Bowling Green's deficit to one at 24-23. Xavier, though, completed the match on a Kathryn Trout kill for the 25-23 win.
Jackson finished with a team-high 11 kills and had three blocks. Shari Luther added nine kills and four blocks and was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance throughout the three matches, averaging 2.91 kills per set and hitting .364 with a team-high 12 blocks.
Xavier moves to 7-5 with the win and Bowling Green falls to 7-6. The Falcons host Oakland Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the final tune-up before MAC play begins.
