The Bowling Green State University women's golf team continued the fall portion of its 2009-10 schedule today with an 18-hole score of 327 and a second-place finish at the Youngstown State University Invitational.
Originally scheduled for 36 holes, the one-day tournament was shortened to just one round of 18 holes due to heavy winds at The Links at Firestone Farms, a par-72, 5962-yard course in Columbiana, Ohio. Both of Bowling Green's tournaments so far this fall have been weather-shortened from 36 to 18 holes.
Bowling Green finished only four strokes behind tournament host and champion Youngstown State (323). Cleveland State (346) finished third, while St. Francis (PA) University (353) was fourth. Rounding out the five-tam field was Niagara College of Canada. Niagara finished the day with a score of 420.
Senior Megan Gormley led the way individually for the Falcons with a score of 79 (39-40). Gormley finished in sole possession of second place, just two shots behind tournament medalist Samantha Formeck of Youngstown State (77).
All five of Bowling Green's entrants finished in the top eleven of the 29-player field. Fellow senior Hannah Lambert tied for third place with an 81 (40-41). Junior Marisa Glew tied for sixth place at 83 (39-44), while freshman Susannah Grunden earned her first top-ten finish for the Falcons with an 84 (43-41), good for a ninth-place tie. Lauren Glew, also a junior, finished in 11th place with an 85 (41-44).
Individually, the 29 players in this year's tournament managed only nine holes with a score better than par due to the poor playing conditions. Bowling Green's players earned three of those birdies. Megan Gormley birdied the par-four 5th hole, while Hannah Lambert earned a birdie on the par-four 13th hole. Susannah Grunden scored the day's only birdie on the par-five 12th hole.
As a team, Bowling Green performed best on the par-five holes, earning a ten-over-par score. That was the best mark for any of the tournament's five teams; next closest was Youngstown State at +17.
The next tournament for the Falcons will be this weekend at the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, PA. The two-day tournament will run from Saturday, October 3rd to Sunday, October 4th. The Falcons will then immediately head to Fairlawn, Ohio for the Zippy Invitational, which will be held on Monday, October 5th and Tuesday, October 6th.
