Oxford, Ohio – Miami (Ohio) used a 13-0 run midway through the second half to overcome a three-point deficit and pull away from the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team in a 64-52 RedHawks' win Saturday at Millett Hall. Miami shot 67 percent from the field in the second half to get the win.
Jordon Crawford knocked down a three-pointer and Marc Larson followed with a lay-up to give Bowling Green a 36-33 lead with 11:28 to play in the game. But Miami scored 13 consecutive points over the next 3:42 and the Falcons were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way.
Bowling Green tried to make a run on a couple of occasions as Dee Brown stopped that 13-point spurt with a silky-smooth jumper that cut the deficit to eight. Miami's Antonio Ballard missed the front end of the 1-and-1 on the next possession but the RedHawks recovered the offensive rebound and scored the next four points.
Trailing 50-38 with 5:30 to play, Bowling Green again tried to fight back. Brown knocked down a three-pointer and Otis Polk slammed home a dunk with 3:50 left to make it 50-43. But Miami went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line on the next two trips down the floor to seal the game.
Brown ended with a team-high 17 points, making 3-of-5 three-pointers, and added four rebounds and a game-high four assists. Scott Thomas added 10 points as the only other double-figure scorer for the Falcons. Crawford came off the bench to score eight points and dished out three assists.
The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams as Bowling Green shot 35 percent and Miami just 30 percent from the field. The Falcons led by as many as six points and took a 20-19 lead into the break.
Bowling Green squandered an opportunity to move back into a first place tie in the Mid-American Conference East Division. With losses by Akron and Buffalo, those two teams are now tied with Kent State and Miami atop the East at 3-2 in league play. The Falcons are 2-3 and Ohio is 1-4.
Miami improves to 6-12 on the season with the win and Bowling Green falls to 9-8. The Falcons will begin play against the MAC West Wednesday when the team plays at Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.
