Barnes, Prochaska Named Papa John's Athletes Of The Week
January 05, 2010 | Football, General, Women's Basketball
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Papa John's Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are football player Freddie Barnes and women's basketball player Lauren Prochaska.
Male Athlete of the Week
Freddie Barnes, a senior from Chicago Heights, Ill., was named the Humanitarian Bowl Most Valuable Player after recording bowl records for catches (17) and yards (219) in a game to go along with three touchdowns in the Falcons' 43-42 loss to Idaho. On the season Barnes finished with 155 catches, most-ever in NCAA history, smashing the previous record of 142, held by Manny Hazzard (Houston) since 1989.
Female Athlete of the Week
Lauren Prochaska, a junior from Plain City, Ohio, led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding as Bowling Green split a pair of games to close the non-conference schedule. She averaged 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds as BGSU lost a narrow 65-60 decision at Hartford before returning home to pick up a 70-57 win over SIU Edwardsville. She led all players in scoring in each of the two games, posting 18 points, six rebounds and two assists against Hartford. She added 27 points, nine rebounds and three steals against SIU Edwardsville and was 10-of-12 at the free-throw line. With 1,340 career points, she needs one more to move into 13th place in program history in career scoring.
