Falcons Tenth After Abbreviated First Day at Bearcat Invitational
October 11, 2010 | Men's Golf
Sophomore Wes Gates Paces Falcons in First Round
FIRST ROUND RESULTS
The men's golf team at Bowling Green State University rests solidly in the middle of the 18-team field after the first round of the 2010 (Cincinnati) Bearcat Invitational at the Traditions Golf Club in Hebron, Kentucky.
Thirty-six holes were initially scheduled for play on Monday (Oct. 11); however, darkness fell on the par-72, 7,103 yard course before the teams were able to complete the day's second round.
The Falcons are part of a pack of nine teams within five shots of each other from seventh to 15th place. Bowling Green's first round total of 301 puts them tenth place, two shots behind Austin Peay and Morehead State, who are tied for seventh. The Falcons, who are tied with Cleveland State, are one shot behind Marshall.
BGSU leads Ohio, Dayton and Eastern Kentucky each by one stroke and Bellarmine by three.
The top six teams are just a few shots ahead of the group that includes the Falcons; tournament host Cincinnati, along with Oakland, leads the field after putting together a 289 in the first round. Ball State and Northern Kentucky are each two shots behind the leaders.
Individually, the Falcons were led on Monday by Wes Gates. Gates carded a 74 over the first 18 holes to tie for 24th place. He entered the second round only two shots out of the top ten and only three out of the top five. In fact, only the top three have posted sub-70 rounds thus far.
Freshman Chris Melvin and junior Drew Preston, fresh off his victory at the John Piper Intercollegiate, are each just one shot behind Gates after both carded rounds of 75 on Monday. Melvin and Preston finished the first round tied for 36th.
Falcon sophomore Charlie Olson registered a first round total of 77, while Parker Hewit finished with a 79.
The teams will complete the second round on Tuesday morning. The field will then be re-seeded and third round play will begin shortly thereafter.
A full recap will be available at BGSUFalcons.com after the completion of play on Tuesday.
