The Bowling Green State University men's golf team aims for its sixth league championship and first since 1983 when the Falcons invade Maineville, Ohio for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Championships.
The 65th annual conference championshp tournament takes place at the TPC River's Bend, a course designed by Arnold Palmer and the current host of the Nationwide Chiquita Classic. The par-72 layout spreads over 7,180 yards near the Little Miami River just north of Cincinnati.
Miami University hosts the three-day, 72-hole event from Friday through Sunday (April 29-May 1). This year will mark the first time the championship tournament has been held in Maineville; the previous seven championships have been held in either Indianapolis, Ind., Nashport, Ohio or Westerville, Ohio.
Bowling Green enters this year's championship with momentum on their side. The team leads the MAC in scoring average (292.23) and has finished third or better in five of their ten tournaments this season. In three others, the Falcons finished in the top half of the field. Over the last two weeks, BGSU finished second at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational and third and the Boilermaker Invitational.
Individually, the Falcons feature three of seven best scoring averages in the league.
Junior Drew Preston leads the group with a 72.93 mark in 29 rounds. Preston finished third in Muncie, Ind. before tying for 11th place last weekend. He owns five top-20s and three top-3s in just his last seven tournaments.
Parker Hewit, also a junior, and sophomore Wes Gates have fired identical 73.52 averages over the season's 29 rounds. Hewit just posted a career-best third place finish at the Boilermaker Invitational following a 217. Meanwhile, Gates has earned three straight top-20 appearances.
The final two spots in BGSU's lineup go to two Falcon newcomers -- Chris Melvin and Charlie Olson. Olson has struggled somewhat with consistency during the spring, but he is capable of dominating a tournament at virtually any time. He showed this capability at October's APSU Intercollegiate, where he carded three consecutive sub-70 rounds (67-69-68) to shatter BGSU's 54-hole record score and win the tournament.
Like Hewit, Melvin earned his career-best finish at the Boilermaker Invitational. Melvin's pair of 74s helped achieve a composite 228 and a tie for 20th. Last September, at Marshall, Melvin totaled 211 after very consistent rounds of 70, 71 and 70 for his previous-best finish (21st).
Play begins on Friday with two of the weekend's four rounds. The opening salvo commences at 8:00 a.m. with staggered tee times from the first and tenth tees in groups of two. The five BGSU golfers start from the tenth hole.
Drew Preston tees off first at 8:48 a.m., followed by Wes Gates (8:56), Parker Hewit (9:12), Charlie Olson (9:20) and Chris Melvin (9:36). Melvin will be the final golfer to begin each of the first and second rounds. Second-round tee times are scheduled for exactly five hours after the first round. For example, Preston has a 1:48 p.m. tee time for the second round.
Tee times for the final two rounds are based on the team standings from the previous evening. Teams will play beginning at 8:00 a.m. and continue to tee off through 9:52 a.m. in three-man groups from the first tee.
