With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-5-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the MAC. BGSU is currently in third place in the seven-team league. The Hawks, a MAC affiliate member for the sport of men's soccer, drop to 2-9-1 and 1-2-0, respectively.
Topolic headed home a corner kick by freshman Jacob Eganhouse early in the second half. The header, which came at the 54:22 mark, was one of just two BGSU shots on goal on the night, but proved to be the winning tally.
Eganhouse's kick found Topolic 12 yards out, and he headed the ball past HC 'keeper Lee Fenner. Fenner got to the shot, but could not prevent the powerful header from going into the net.
"It was a great cross by Jacob," Topolic said. "Hartwick was zoning, so I was in between two defenders. I saw the ball coming to me, jumped and the goalie got a piece of it, but it went into the net. Again, it was a great ball from Jacob."
Junior Miguel Rosales made seven saves for the Falcons, picking up his fifth complete-game shutout of the season. HC was credited with 15 total shots to BGSU's seven, and the Hawks had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
"This win means a lot to us," said Topolic. "Hartwick is a very good team. To even our record, both overall and in the MAC, is a great feeling for our team, and now we are moving forward to the next game."
BGSU has just one match next week. The Falcons step outside of conference play to host nationally-ranked Michigan State University. That contest, BG's final home regular-season match, is Wednesday (Oct. 20) at 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
