Charlie Olson's Two Best Rounds of Season Lead Way for BGSU
APSU INTERCOLLEGIATE: Team Standings (.pdf) - Player Standings (.pdf)
In their last opportunity to play competitive golf as a group before next spring, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team appears intent on not wasting the opportunity to leave a lasting impression for the winter months.
On the first day of the Austin Peay (APSU) Intercollegiate, the Falcons played two of their best rounds of the six-tournament fall schedule. BGSU tied for fourth place in the first round, posting a total of 281. In the second round, the team tied for the third-best score and came within one shot of the team record for 18 holes by carding a 276.
The team's total of 557 over 36 holes is one shot shy of the team record for two rounds and places the team firmly into second place. The Falcons lead Samford by three strokes, but 13 of the 17 teams in the tournament shot 569 or better for the day.
However, s noted in the tournament preview, low scores are a requirement to win this event; to illustrate, note that Jacksonville State leads the field by 15 strokes. JSU shot an incredible 259 in the second round with all five players under 70, including scores of 62 and 64. By comparison, the Falcons had three players under 70 during the second round, including an individual round of 67.
The par-72, 6,841-yard golf course in Hopkinsville, Ky. was kind to Falcon golfers throughout the day. Six of the 10 rounds individual rounds played by the Orange and Brown were under par, and the team achieved its two lowest individual rounds of the season, both registered by Falcon newcomers.
Sophomore transfer Charlie Olson led the Falcon pack by carding his two best rounds of the season. His first round score of 67 was the best round by any Falcon thus far in the fall season, and he followed that with a 69 on the back end of the day. His eight-under-par 136 is tied for fourth, only three shots behind the leader.
Freshman Morgan Dobbins, in only his second tournament of the season, struggled to a 79 in the first round but responded with vigor in the second round, posting BGSU's second 67 of the day and improving to two-over-par for the day.
Parker Hewit finished the day in the top 20 after playing four-under-par for the first 36 holes. Part of his 140 for the day was a second-round 69.
Wes Gates and Drew Preston each also posted under-par rounds. Gates finished the day at even par after carding a 71 in the second round, while Preston played the first 18 in 70 strokes and finished the day with a 145.
The final round begins tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. (EDT) with a shotgun start. Complete results will be available shortly after the conclusion of play.
