APSU INTERCOLLEGIATE: Team Standings (.pdf) -- Player Leaderboard (.pdf)
No matter what happened this week at the Austin Peay (APSU) Intercollegiate, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team knew they would have to live with those results until their season resumes approximately five months from now.
Given what happened yesterday and today (Oct. 19) in Hopkinsville, Ky., it should be safe to assume that the Falcons can rest well this winter.
Scoring a 54-hole composite 831 at the par-72, 6,841-yard Links at Novadell course, Bowling Green completed its best tournament in program history. The team shattered its previous 54-hole record by 14 strokes.
The Falcons placed second in the field of 17 teams, coming in nine strokes behind Jacksonville State, who claimed a second-round score of 259. BGSU was the only team to post three rounds of 281 or better in the tournament, and they finished nine strokes ahead of Oakland, who ended up in third place. Both BGSU and Jacksonville State broke the previous tournament record (832) for 54-hole score.
Bowling Green recorded a score of 274 in the final round, breaking the team's previous record for 18 holes. That record (275), as well as the 54-hole record, were established at the 2005 John Piper Intercollegiate.
Individually, sophomore transfer Charlie Olson won individual medalist honors. Olson won a four-way playoff with Gonzalo Berlin and Matthew Wallace of Jacksonville State and Billy Peel, Jr. of Eastern Kentucky.
To win, Olson birdied the second playoff hole after hitting an approach shot to within a few feet of the pin.
To even get to the playoff, Olson set Bowling Green's all-time 54-hole record with a total of 204, breaking the old mark by four strokes. His 12-under-par included rounds of 67, 69 and 68; he was one of only four players in the 91-man field to register three sub-70 rounds this week.
Only one other player in the history of the APSU Intercollegiate has scored lower over 54 holes than Olson did this week.
Olson becomes the seventh different player to win individual medalist honors since Garry Winger became the Falcons' head coach. Those seven players have won ten championships, with five of those coming since the beginning of the 2009-10 season.
Junior Parker Hewit finished second on the team and tied for 14th overall with his best career tournament. Hewit carded 210 (-6; 71, 69, 70) over the two days in Kentucky. He has scored better than 220 in four of the six tournaments this season and also has four top-20 finishes.
Fellow junior and team captain Drew Preston posted the second-best 54 hole score of his career, as he earned a four-under-par 212. Preston bested that mark only once before - at the 2009 John Piper Intercollegiate, when he scored 209. This week, he used rounds of 70, 75 and 67 to tie for 22nd place.
Wes Gates joined the party, as he secured his career-best score with a final round 69 today. His two-day total of 213 breaks his old personal best by five strokes. Gates also had rounds of 73 and 71 to finish in a tie for 28th.
Freshman Morgan Dobbisn rounded out the action for the Orange and Brown. Dobbins, playing in only his second tournament as a Falcon, struggled early. However, he responded with a total of 139 over his final 36 holes and finished with a 218 for the tournament.
