
Ball State Triumphs Over Falcons In Three Sets

Bowling Green, Ohio – Four players had at least eight kills but the Bowling Green State University volleyball team was unable to derail and efficient Ball State squad Saturday night in a 25-21, 25-19, 25-12 loss.
Danielle Tonyan paced the Falcons with 10 kills and Noelle Spitler, Paige Penrod and Kari Galen had eight each but BGSU was unable to overcome a 16-kill effort from Ball State's Whitney Heeres.
Bowling Green hung tough in the first two sets but Ball State showed the experience to close out those stanzas late. The opening set was tied at 20-20 and the Cardinals held a slim 16-14 lead in the middle frame before putting it away.
The Falcons led 10-8 early in the first set but the lead swung back-and-forth throughout until a Tonyan kill tied the score at 20-20. Ball State's Kylee Baker had a kill and Heeres added a solo block to put the Cardinals on top 22-20. The Falcons got back within one on a Spitler kill but three consecutive Ball State kills put the set away.
The second set was tied at 11-11 but Ball State scored the next three points and it was never tied again. Spitler had a kill that made it 16-14 but Ball State scored four of the next five points and never looked back.
Ball State used a 10-1 run in the third set to pull away during the latter stages of the frame and the Cardinals cruised to victory.
For the match, Bowling Green hit .145 and Ball State attacked at a .308 clip. The Cardinals held a 51-40 edge in digs and a 9.0-2.0 advantage in blocks. The Falcons' Ashley Dunn had a match-high 15 digs and Sam Fish handed out 24 assists.
Ball State improves to 18-4 overall and 8-2 in MAC play. Bowling Green falls to 7-18 overall and 1-9 in MAC play. The Falcons host Buffalo Friday night at 7 p.m. for Parent's Night and then host Akron Saturday night at 3 p.m. for Senior Night. That will be the team's final home game of the season and final home match in Anderson Arena before moving to the Stroh Center for the 2011 season.
