BGSU Student-Athletes Graduating At High Rate
October 29, 2010 | General
Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA released the 2009-10 Graduation Success Rates (GSR) for all NCAA Division I programs and teams and Bowling Green student-athletes are ahead of the curve. BGSU has an 84 percent graduation success rate, second best in the Mid-American Conference and well ahead of the overall Division I graduation rate of 79 percent.
The latest report is for student-athletes who began college in 2003-04 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame. In fact, 13 of Bowling Green's 16 teams (BGSU has 18 teams but women's cross country and women's indoor and outdoor track and field are listed as one sport) rank in the top half of the conference for graduation success rate.
“This is another confirmation of the work our student-athletes are doing,” Mark Shook, Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Student-Athlete Services, said. “We've had a great year in achieving our academic goals and this confirms our effort to recruit and retain the best students and the best athletes possible. All of BGSU and our fans can be proud of this.”
Women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's tennis, and volleyball all had a perfect 100 percent GSR and tied for the best ranking in the MAC. Women's track and field (which includes cross country and both indoor and outdoor track) had a 96 percent graduation success rate, which led the conference, and men's basketball's 91 percent graduation success rate was also the best in the league. In all, that means BGSU is at the top of the conference in seven of 16 sports.
The men's ice hockey team had a GSR of 93 percent, which was good for second in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and the men's cross country GSR of 80 percent ranked second in the MAC. Other teams that ranked in the top half of the conference were football, softball, baseball, and women's soccer.
