Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team had 24 attack errors and hit only .139 in a three-set loss to Kent State Saturday afternoon 25-23, 25-16, 25-18.
Kent State, by comparison, had just eight attack errors and just two in each of the final two sets. The Falcons had just four less kills and two less digs than the Golden Flashes but the attack errors were too much to overcome.
Freshmen Paige Penrod and Danielle Tonyan had 14 and 13 kills, respectively, while freshman Laura Avila handed out 33 assists. Another freshman, Ashley Dunn, had a match-high 16 digs.
Bowling Green built a three-point lead midway through the first set but Kent State tied the score at 18-18 and it see-sawed back and forth from there. An Avila kill followed by a Kent State attack error gave the Falcons a 21-19 lead but the Golden Flashes scored three of the next four points to tie the score. Still tied at 23-23, Kent's Aleksandra Nowak and Maigan Larsen combined on a block and Meredith Paskert terminated an attack for the 25-23 win.
After the first set, Bowling Green was never very competitive, falling behind 15-9 in the second and never making a run. After falling behind 21-9 in the third, the Falcons did close on a 9-4 run but it was not enough to get back into the match.
Kent State completed an unbeaten weekend to improve to 10-11 overall and 3-3 in MAC play. The Falcons fall to 6-14 overall and 1-5 in league action. BGSU will head on the road over the following weekend, playing at Central Michigan Friday at 7 p.m. and at Eastern Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m.
