Kent, Ohio – Bowling Green freshman Paige Penrod broke the program record for kills in a season but the Falcons lost to Kent State Friday night 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.
With 19 kills Friday, Penrod has now posted 370 kills this year. Susie Norris held the record since 2000 when she had 360 kills in her freshman campaign.
Like most of the year, Bowling Green was competitive throughout the match but was unable to put sets away. The Falcons led by as many as three points midway through the opening frame, had a five-point lead in the second set, and was tied 23-23 in the third.
Kent State, though, hit .352 for the match, including .387 in the second and .440 in the third with just one attack error in each of those final two sets. Bowling Green outdug Kent State 35-32 and had as many kills and aces as the Golden Flashes, but attack errors were the Falcons' undoing. Bowling Green had 22 and hit just .194.
Penrod hit .308 with those 19 kills and added four digs. Noelle Spitler and Danielle Tonyan added seven kills each, while Laura Avila handed out 34 assists. Ashley Dunn had 11 digs, giving her 432 on the year and moving her into one of the top 10 single-seasons in program history. She needs 16 more to move into ninth place.
Kent State improves to 12-18 overall and 5-10 in MAC play, while Bowling Green falls to 8-22 overall and 2-13 in conference action. The Falcons will close out the regular season Saturday night at Ohio at 7 p.m.
