Bowling Green, Ohio - Four players scored in double figures as the Bowling Green men's basketball team beat rival Toledo for the second year in a row, posting a 58-47 win Monday night in Anderson Arena.
Bowling Green never trailed in the game, scoring 10 of the first 11 points, and led by as many as 16 points in the second half. The Falcons shot 56 percent from the field and held Toledo to just 42 percent shooting.
The Falcons opened the game by pounding it inside, scoring 18 of their 26 first-half points in the paint. Otis Polk, Erik Marschall and Scott Thomas each scored on lay-ups to put Bowling Green on top 6-0. Dee Brown and Polk added field goals as the Falcons built a 10-1 lead but Toledo hung close and only trailed by six at the half, 26-20.
Bowling Green essentially put the game away in the first three minutes of the second half, scoring 11 points on the team's first four possessions of the period. Thomas hit a three-pointer and followed with a jumper on the next trip down the floor. Then Brown and Thomas hit back-to-back three's to make it 37-24. The Falcons extended the lead to 16 on a Joe Jakubowski three-pointer with 5:55 to play to make it 46-30 and Toledo never got it back to single digits.
Thomas led BG with 14 points and continued his torrid second-half scoring, putting up 10 of those points after the break. In the last seven games, he has scored 29 first-half points and 90 second-half points. Marschall and Brown added 12 each and Polk finished with 10. Thomas added a game-high six rebounds along with three steals and two blocked shots. Brown added five assists. Jakubowski had eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
Toledo was led by Justin Anyijong, who ended with 18 points but no other Rocket scored more than eight. Toledo did hold a 26-22 rebounding edge but forced just eight Bowling Green turnovers. The Falcons held a 14-3 advantage in points off of turnovers.
Toledo falls to 3-19 overall and 0-8 in the MAC, while Bowling Green improves to 11-9 overall and 4-4 in the MAC. The Falcons will head to the road for the next two games, playing at Ball State Thursday at 7 p.m.
