Towson, Md. – Bowling Green State University senior Marc Larson was named ESPN The Magazine Second-Team Academic All-American for men's basketball today. Larson, a 6-foot-9 center from Mattawan, Mich., is the first Bowling Green athlete selected to the second team or better since 2006.
Larson, who owns a 3.97 grade point average in engineering technology, has started 10 games for Bowling Green this year and is averaging 5.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in 19.8 minutes. He is shooting 45.8 percent from the floor and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line while adding 19 blocked shots, second-most on the team. Larson has teamed up with starters Otis Polk and Erik Marschall to make for one of the most productive front-court trios in the Mid-American Conference.
The selection marks the 70th time in the history of the prestigious award that a Bowling Green athlete has been selected to one of the teams, but Larson is just the fifth men's basketball player selected. He is the first Falcon since former swimmer Jessica Guiness in 2006 to be named to the first or second team and the first men's basketball player to be named to one of the teams since Matt Lefeld in 2007 (a third-team selection).
Larson joins Nevada's Luke Babbitt, New Mexico's Roman Martinez, Purdue's E'Twaun Moore, and South Carolina Upstate's Nick Schneiders on the second team. Notre Dame's Tim Abromaitis, Kansas' Cole Aldrich, Columbia's Patrick Foley, Butler's Matt Howard, and La Salle's Yves Mekongo were all named to the first team and Aldrich was named Academic All-America of the Year. The third team consisted of Northern Colorado's Devon Beitzel, Wichita State's Graham Hatch, Butler's Gordon Hayward, Brown's Matthey Mullery, and Western Carolina's Jake Robinson.
Larson and teammate Joe Jakubowski were each named ESPN The Magazine First Team All-District for the second consecutive season and both were on the ballot for Academic All-America. Larson was the only player from the district (District IV) to be selected to one of the Academic All-America teams.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative gpa of 3.30 on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, and be nominated by the sports information director at the institution.
Since the program's inception in 1952, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has bestowed Academic All-American honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III, and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
