BGSU sees season come to an end at 12-10
The University of Akron posted a 4-1 win over the Bowling Green State University tennis team Friday afternoon (April 30), knocking the Falcons out of the MAC Championships. The quarterfinal-round match was held at Sorensen Courts on the campus of Western Michigan University.
With the win, the Zips, the tourney's second seed, improve to 19-2 on the season. UA advances to Saturday's (May 1) semifinal round. The Falcons, the seventh seed for the MAC Championships, end the season with a dual-match record of 12-10.
Akron picked up the doubles point with wins at the top-two flights to begin the match. The Zips captured the second-flight match by an 8-1 score, and UA's top-flight team of Angelika Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart pulled out a win over junior Christine Chiricosta and freshman Maddy Eccleston at the number-one flight. The latter match was tight throughout, and neither team led by more than two games until the Zips won the final two games for an 8-5 victory.
At the third flight, the Falcons' team of sophomore Jessica Easdale and freshman Katie Grubb was locked in a close battle with UA's Jeremie Benjamin and Angelina Jogasuria. The BGSU team trailed by a 6-5 score when that match was halted.
In singles play, Grubb's match was the first to finish. In her MAC Championships singles debut, the Falcon freshman lost just three games in a straight-sets sweep of Carolina Castro Cota (6-3, 6-0). But, the Zips had won the opening set at each of the other five flights, and closed out three of those matches to reach four points and seal the victory.
At the fourth flight, Pantusart picked up a victory over Easdale, while Angelika Jogasuria was victorious over senior co-captain Katia Babina at the third flight.
Akron's Zara Harutyunyan defeated Chiricosta at the top flight to give UA the victory. Chiricosta, however, gave her opponent quite a fight in the opening set. leading by a 4-3 count before the two-time MAC Player of the Year pulled out a 6-4 decision.
That set marked the first time this year that a MAC opponent had won more than three games in a set against Harutyunyan. In eight MAC regular-season matches, Harutyunyan posted eight wins in straight sets, losing a total of just 28 games in those 16 sets (1.75 games per set).
Senior co-captain Samantha Kintzel dropped her opening set to Angelina Jogasuria in second-flight action, but Kintzel was trailing only 6-5 in the second set when the match was halted. At the fifth flight, Eccleston lost a 6-4 decision to Anya Baronayte, and that match was in its second set when play was stopped.
Falcon head coach Penny Dean loses the services of two players, Babina and Kintzel, off of her eight-woman roster.
