Named to the second team in 2010 after earning third-team honors a year ago
Bowling Green State University tennis standout Christine Chiricosta has been named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Women's At-Large Academic All-America Team, it was announced Thursday (June 10). Chiricosta, an Academic All-American for the second consecutive year, was named to the second team in 2010.

Last year, Chiricosta was chosen to the third team, at the time becoming the first women's tennis player in BGSU history to be named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Chiricosta, a junior in 2009-10, was named to the All-Mid-American Conference First Team this season, after earning all-conference second-team honors in each of her first two years at BGSU. A native of Avon Lake, Ohio (Avon Lake HS), she had an overall singles record of 22-9 in '09-10, leading the team in wins. Chiricosta had a 15-7 record in dual matches, having played at the number-one flight in all 22 of BGSU's duals this spring, and went 5-3 in MAC regular-season action.
In doubles, Chiricosta finished with an overall record of 21-9, including a 16-6 mark in dual-match play. She teamed with freshman Maddy Eccleston at the top flight for every dual match, with that duo going 6-2 in MAC contests.
Chiricosta's total of 43 victories this season led the team, and ties her for 10th in BGSU history.
Entering her senior season, Chiricosta has a combined career total of 128 wins, with 64 singles and 64 doubles victories. She has moved into 12th place on the BGSU doubles wins list, and is tied for 12th in overall wins and deadlocked for 14th in career singles wins. Chiricosta is within striking distance of all three school records.
While Chiricosta's list of athletic accomplishments is lengthy, her academic exploits may be even more impressive. In April, she was named BGSU's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the athletic department's Academic Honors Night. That award is given to just one male and one female student-athlete in the junior class for all BGSU sports.
Chiricosta was named the MAC's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week three times this season. Last year, she was named an ITA Scholar Athlete for the second-straight year, and, as mentioned, also was chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team. She was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team in both 2009 and '10, and was named an ITA Scholar Athlete in each of her first two years (this year's ITA awards have not yet been announced).
In the classroom, Chiricosta maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as an adolescent/young adult/secondary education major at the time of nomination.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team was the result of voting by CoSIDA members within District IV. The district consists of schools in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). Additionally, she must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing (true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
The at-large team hopefuls consisted of district student-athletes in the women's sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. The first-team all-district selections then were eligible for All-America honors, which were determined by a vote of members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee as well as the CoSIDA Board of Directors.
The tennis Falcons concluded the 2009-10 season with an overall dual-match record of 12-10.
