Marco Ilao joins BGSU
Bowling Green State University men's soccer coach Eric Nichols has announced the addition of a student-athlete to the program. Marco Ilao (Mississauga, Ontario/Wilbraham and Monson [Mass.] Academy) will join the Falcons this fall.
“Marco has good size and athleticism and has been in some good soccer environments,” said Nichols. “Those soccer aspects certainly piqued our interest, but after getting to know him and his parents we learned that in addition to these soccer qualities, Marco has the type of character to help us get to where we want to go.”
Ilao, as mentioned a native of Oakville, Ontario, was a three-year starter at Kings Christian Collegiate before attending Wilbraham and Monson Academy in Wilbraham, Mass., for the 2009-10 academic year. Last fall, Wilbraham and Monson finished with a 10-0-4 overall record and a 9-0-4 mark in the Western New England Prep School Soccer Association (WNEPSSA). Ilao was named to the all-league team for the second consecutive season, and also earned Massachusetts State Soccer Coaches Association Prep All-State honors for the second year in a row.
Also last season, the Titans led the league in fewest goals allowed, surrendering only seven total goals. Ilao was a two-year captain for Wilbraham and Monson, totaling five goals and three assists.
During his tenure at King's Christian Collegiate, Ilao had seven goals and eight assists. He helped that team to the Ontario High School Tournament 'A' Championship in the spring of 2008.
“We are excited to add Marco to our program,” said Nichols. “We are looking forward to getting everyone back on campus later in the summer and getting started.”
Ilao joins a large group of newcomers for Nichols and assistant coach Paul Habrecht, bringing the total of first-year Falcons to 12. In the coaching staff's inaugural season at BGSU, the Falcons finished the 2009 campaign with an overall record of 3-12-3 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 2-3-1.
