BGSU Student-Athletes Accomplish Academic Success In 2009-10
June 09, 2010 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University Athletics today announced a record-breaking year for the department's student-athletes in the classroom, while the NCAA announced the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) report, showing BGSU's strong commitment to academic success.
BGSU's student-athletes posted a 3.07 cumulative grade point average through the spring semester, an increase from a 3.03 following the fall of 2009 semester and the highest recorded GPA for the department. In all, 14 of the team's 18 sports held a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. During the Athletics Honors Night to cap off the 2009-10 school year, the hockey team was recognized as having the highest men's team GPA and the women's basketball team posted the highest women's team GPA. As well, the men's basketball team had the largest improvement for a men's team and the women's basketball team had the largest improvement for a women's team.
“The academic efforts of our student-athletes continue to be one of the high points within BGSU Athletics,” Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “This is truly a team effort. Our coaches recruit terrific young women and men, and the student-athletes themselves invest the time and efforts to excel in the classroom.”
As well, the NCAA today publicly released its annual APR figures for all NCAA Division I athletic programs. The report showed a strong commitment to academic success at Bowling Green State University and included four important notes for BGSU Athletics.
- As previously reported in May, the BGSU Tennis program was recognized as ranking among the top 10 percent of all NCAA Division I women's tennis programs with a perfect 1000 multi-year APR score.
- Five of Bowling Green's athletic teams had a perfect 1000 single-year APR score for 2008-09. Those five teams were men's golf, women's golf, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.
- The football program, which was forced to take a scholarship reduction a year ago, is ranked among the 30 most improved programs in Football Bowl Subdivision and will take no further penalty with a 931 score.
- BGSU's men's basketball APR fell just below the NCAA's 925 cut off score with a 922, but the team will not be penalized. BGSU's score was below the minimum due to the departure of an exhausted-eligibility senior who left BGSU in mid-summer 2009 for a professional basketball opportunity overseas. Since he had no eligibility remaining, there is no scholarship reduction penalty.
The APR is a real-time measure of eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes competing on every NCAA Division I athletics team. The most recent scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09 academic years. The goal of academic reform is improvement, not punishment. Not only does academic reform ensure accountability for student-athletes, teams and institutions, but it also provides fairness by considering individual circumstances per team and school.
