August 25, 2010 | Men's Soccer
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team has one final tune-up this weekend, before the 2010 regular season begins. The Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will host the University of Indianapolis in a scrimmage on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 28). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field on the BGSU campus.
Admission to Saturday's match will be free. In fact, as part of BGSU's Centennial celebration, there will be free admission to all of the Falcons' home soccer matches in 2010. Live stats will be available for the scrimmage by clicking here.
The Falcons played a pair of scrimmages last weekend, splitting the two matches. BGSU downed Windsor by a 3-0 score on Friday (Aug. 20), with seniors Dusko Topolic and Garrett Bireline and redshirt junior Chris Jurtovski scoring the Falcons' goals.
On Sunday (Aug. 22), Oakland defeated the Falcons, 2-1, in Rochester, Mich. The teams had agreed prior to the match to play two 45-minute periods plus a third, 30-minute session. The Falcons and Golden Grizzlies were deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but OU scored late in the extra period for the win. Topolic scored the Falcons' goal, finding the back of the net for the second-straight match.
The team's three goalkeepers combined for the shutout against Windsor, with redshirt junior Miguel Rosales playing the first half, and sophomore Dylan Schoettley and freshman Michael Wiest splitting time in the second half.
At Oakland, Rosales played the first 90 minutes in net, making two saves, while Schoettley was in goal for the final 30 minutes. A total of 22 different players saw action for Nichols and assistant coach Paul Habrecht in that match.
Indianapolis, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in NCAA Division II, will have played a pair of home exhibitions prior to meeting the Falcons on Saturday. Interim head coach John Higgins' club lost a 5-2 decision to Northern Illinois on Aug. 18. The Greyhounds were scheduled to host Franklin on Wednesday night (Aug. 25).
A year ago, the Greyhound finished with an overall record of 8-7-2 and a GLVC mark of 6-7-1. Seventeen letterwinners, including 10 starters, return from that '09 club. Sophomores Bobby Adkins and Roger Lee, two of those starters, combined for 19 goals and 42 points a year ago.
Following the UIndy match, the Falcons will open the regular-season schedule by heading to Davidson, N.C., for the Davidson adidas Classic. BGSU will face Appalachian State (Sept. 3) and host Davidson (Sept. 5) in that tourney. The home regular-season opener will be against Akron, the number-one team in the nation, on Saturday, Sept. 11.
