Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team came up short in two matches at the Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational Saturday, losing to IPFW 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 and to Oakland in the nightcap 25-22, 25-11, 25-19. Senior Noelle Spitler was named to the all-tournament team after posting 23 kills on a .271 attack percentage with a team-high seven blocks on the weekend. Bowling Green falls to 2-7 on the year and the Falcons will be at home Tuesday night when they host Wright State at 7 p.m.
Match 1 – IPFW defeats BGSU 25-23, 25-21, 25-13
Bowling Green had a chance to take an early advantage in the first set over the team that ended up winning the tournament. The Falcons scored the first five points of the match and still led by five on a Danielle Tonyan kill that made it 15-10.
But IPFW stormed back to tie the score at 19-19 and the Falcons held slight one point edges at 20-19, 21-20, and 22-21. Following an IPFW timeout, the Mastodons scored four of the final five points, including a clinching kill by tournament MVP Megan Steenhuysen, to get a 25-23 win.
Bowling Green again led midway through the second set, scoring three straight points, to take a 14-11 lead. But IPFW came back with four in a row and the Falcons never led again. The Mastodons took a 20-16 lead but a kill by Susie Isphording, followed by back-to-back kills from Cassie Berning, cut the deficit to one. IPFW led 21-20 and scored four of the final five points in the set again to come away with the 25-21 win.
In the third set, BGSU was never really in it as IPFW jumped out to an 8-3 lead, built the advantage to 10 at 23-13 and cruised to the 25-13 win.
After hitting .312 in the first set, Bowling Green attacked at just a .139 clip in the second and .059 in the third. Paige Penrod led the Falcons with nine kills and Berning had seven with a .500 attack percentage. Penrod added two aces and a team-best 11 digs, while Sam Fish added 10 digs.
Match 2 – Oakland defeats BGSU 25-22, 25-11, 25-19
After hitting .216 in the first set, Bowling Green hit just .045 the rest of the way. Spitler was strong throughout with eight kills and a .318 attack percentage, while Ashley Dunn led the Falcons with 13 digs.
Much like the IPFW match, Bowling Green led most of the way in the first set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Oakland eventually took a lead at 14-13 but the match continued to be evenly fought until late in the set. The Golden Grizzlies led 20-19 but a couple of Falcon service errors helped Oakland pull away late.
BGSU was never close in the second set, falling behind 8-1 and rallying late to get to within 14. In the final set, Oakland again took the lead early, building a 10-point edge before a late Bowling Green run cut the final deficit to six.
