DAY ONE RESULTS
In golf, no matter how consistently well you play, you cannot control how your competitors fare. Sometimes, they just have better days.
That would be the story of the Bowling Green State University men's golf team on the first day of the 41st Marshall Invitational, held in Huntington, W.V. at the Guyan Country Club.
As a five-man team, the Falcons had their best day in five years. In the first round, every one of the five-member BGSU team shot 72 or better. No Falcon team had five scores of 72 or better in the same round since the 2005 John Piper Intercollegiate. In fact, there had not been a round with four scores of 72 or better by the Falcons since the team did that twice during the 2007-2008 season.
The second round play almost matched the first; all five members of the Orange and Brown squad shot 73 or better.
For the day, Bowling Green posted on of the team's best 36-hole scores ever -- a 567 (279-288). The team ended the day at one under par on the par-71, 6,534 yard course.
Yet, after all of that, the Falcons found themselves tied for seventh out of a field of 15 after the first day of competiton.
Bowling Green roosts with Virginia Tech and Wright State in the tie for seventh. Those three trail sixth-place Austin Peay by two strokes and host Marshall by three. Eastern Kentucky sits five strokes ahead of the Falcons, while Miami (Ohio) is ahead by seven. Ohio State and Xavier lead the tournament.
Richmond, Toledo, and William and Mary are in tenth through 12th place, respectively, all within five strokes of the Falcons.
The course at Guyan CC yielded low score after low score on the day, to the point where multiple tournament records were broken.
Individual tournament leader Sebastian MacLean of Xavier set both the 18- and 36-hole record for the tournament. MacLean's first-round 63 broke the old tournament record of 65, while his 36-hole total of 132 (63-69) broke the old record of 136.
The team record for an 18-hole score was 273 overall and 274 for the first round. Ohio State matched the overall record and eclipsed that of the first round by carding a total of 273 on the first 18. After a first-day 547 (273-274), they stand poised to break the 54-hole record of 837.
There were 32 individual sub-70 rounds over today's 36 holes. Only three of the tournament's 15 teams failed to have at least one. One of those sub-70 rounds belongs to Falcon junior Parker Hewit, who matched his career-best score with a 68 in the first round.
Hewit posted a 73 in the second round to finish the day in a tie for 25th place at one-under-par (141). Joining Hewit in that tie are sophomore Wes Gates and freshman Chris Melvin.
Gates and Melvin posted matching rounds of 70 and 71 to each finish at 141 for the day. For Melvin, his resurgence after a rough debut round continues -- he now has a 72 average for his last four rounds.
Those three are nine strokes behind the tournament leader; however, they sit only three strokes out of a five-way tie for eighth place at 138, so each has a great opportunity to move into the top ten.
Both junior Drew Preston and sophomore Charlie Olson had solid days. Preston rests at two over par (144) after a first-day 71-73. He is in a tie for 47th place. Meanwhile, Olson carded a 72 and a 73 for the day. His two-round 145 gives him an average of 74 for his first five rounds as a Falcon. Olson is tied for 54th but is still very close to a much higher finish.
Competing as an individual, redshirt junior Bryan Mitchell played for the first time since the spring of 2009. For the day, he completed rounds of 80 and 79 for a day's total of 159.
The final round begins on Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. on the Guyan course. A complete recap will be available soon after the conclusion of the tournament.
