At the 2010 Marshall Invitational, the Bowling Green State University men's golf team had one of it's best tournaments over the last four seasons. You just might not notice if you only saw the Falcons' place on the team leaderboard.
Bowling Green posted a first round 279 on their way to a tournament total of 860 (279-288-293). Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season (four-plus years), the Falcons have had only two better individual rounds and three better 54-hole scores.
Unfortunately, over one crazy two-day stretch in Huntington, W.V., those positive steps for the Falcon men's golf team resulted only in a 13th place finish out of 15 teams.
Freshman Chris Melvin continued his hot streak in Tuesday's action with a final round 70 to finish with a 54-hole total of 211, two under par for the tournament. It was one of the best three-round scores in Bowling Green history (the record is 208) and earned Melvin a 21st place finish.
Melvin now has six rounds under his belt as a Falcon; over the last five, he's averaged 71.6 strokes per round.
Parker Hewit, one of the Falcons' veterans as a junior, finished the tournament at one over par (214). After a first-round 68, Hewit recorded back-to-back rounds of 73 to reside in a tie for 34th.
Meanwhile, sophomores Wes Gates and Charlie Olson cannot seem to separate themselves from each other. After finishing the Tiger Intercollegiate in a tie for tenth place, the duo completed the Marshall Invitational in another tie. This time, Gates and Olson each recorded a 219.
Gates' total includes rounds of 70 and 71, while Olson carded rounds of 72, 73 and 74.
Junior Drew Preston ended his tournament one stroke behind the pair of Gates and Olson. He put together an even-par opening round, then finished with a 73 and a 76 for a total of 220.
The two days of play at the par-71, 6,534 yard Guyan Country Club course were crazy. A total of seven individual or team records were broken during the tournament, and the course record was broken – twice.
The tournament's low 18-hole total (273) was tied by Ohio State in the first round, then broken in the third round by both Xavier and Virginia Tech, who each totaled 271 in Tuesday's play.
Going into the tournament, the individual 18-hole record was 65. That was immediately broken by Xavier's Sebastian MacLean, who tied a course record with a 63. Not to be outdone, Wright State's Charlie Doll went out today and carded a 62 to break both records. In the meantime, MacLean set 36- and 54-hole tournament records.
Ohio State won the tournament with a final score of 820; it is their 18th Marshall Invitational title and first since 2004. MacLean won medalist honors with his total of 197.
The Orange and Brown now turn their focus to the Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky. next Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 20 and 21) before hosting the John Piper Intercollegiate in two weeks.
