Buffalo, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team used a season-high 15.0 blocks to move to 1-1 in Mid-American Conference play with a comeback victory over Buffalo 25-18, 16-25, 19-25, 25-22, 17-15 Saturday evening.
Bowling Green had its back against the wall on a few occasions, needing to win both the fourth and fifth sets and then fighting off one match-point in the fifth. Although the Falcons did not hit particularly well (just .126 for the match), they got clutch points when absolutely needed and stayed consistent throughout.
Kari Galen had four blocks and Bowling Green forced Buffalo into 11 attack errors to win the first set 25-18. After dropping the next two sets, the Falcons were put into a position of needing to win each of the last two sets to avoid an 0-2 Mid-American Conference start.
Buffalo looked to be in control after a service ace gave the Bulls a 16-12 lead in the fourth but Bowling Green turned up the intensity and got back in the match. Noelle Spitler had two kills during a four-point run that tied the score at 16-16. After splitting the next six points, Sam Fish had an ace, followed by a Buffalo attack error and a Danielle Tonyan kill that put the Falcons up 22-19. Bowling Green still led 23-22 before another Tonyan kill and another Buffalo attack error sent the match to a fifth set.
With all the momentum, Bowling Green had no trouble early and jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead. But Buffalo scored 10 of the next 14 points to tie the score back up at 13-13. A Paige Penrod kill gave the Falcons their first match point attempt but Buffalo tied the score on a kill and then took a 15-14 lead on a BGSU attack error. But Tonyan got a kill and Laura Avila came up with back-to-back service aces to end the match.
With the win, Bowling Green improved to 6-10 overall and 1-1 in MAC play as Buffalo fell to 13-5 overall and 1-1 in league play just a day after sweeping Miami in its MAC opener. A year ago, the Falcons started conference play 0-6 before splitting their final ten league matches. But this year's team, full of freshmen and sophomores, is off to a better start.
Penrod finished with a team-high 14 kills and Tonyan added 11. Penrod also had 19 digs and three blocks. Dunn ended with 18 digs and two service aces. Galen had a team-high five blocks.
Bowling Green will be back in action Thursday when the Falcons host Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m. The team will then host Western Michigan Saturday at 7 p.m. for Alumnae Day and will recognize the All-Anderson Team following the match.
